I'd question whether you really need the "big engine" in that type of car. You'll get a broader choice of nice cars if you widen the net. IMO the BMWs are ideal for your situation.

You're right to avoid 2+2 because kids have a habit of growing. Even 4-seat convertibles can become snug in the back unless you go for one of the Mercs, which I wouldn't.

Bear in mind that 4-seat generally means 4-seat. There will be no room for 5 and no centre seatbelt.

One thing I did wonder, how usable did you want the rear seats to be?
Hi mate, definitely looking for 4 seats not a 2+2 so 911s, etc are not an option.

Also, thank you everyone for the contributions. I'm looking into these. Not a niche I know much about so trying to educate myself.

6 series, as mentioned above, would be out as well. I loved mine, but it’s smaller in the back than a 4 series.
Same, and both the E92 M3 I had, and the F82 M4 that I have now were/are bigger in the back than the F13 640d I had.

You're best judging the 6 series as a 2 seater really I reckon.

Is the answer not 2 x ND 2.0 MX5s? You and 1 kid in 1 car, the Mrs and the other kid in the other car.

I kind of joke, but years ago there was a neighbour a street over who had 2 x MR2's in the driveway and 2 kids. 2 lovely MK2's and often saw them in convoy to the same place with a kid each. Did break my heart a little when I was walking home from school one day and saw the red one with heavy damage on a flatbed. That was replaced with a Mk3 shortly after. Eventually it did become a 3 car household with the Mk2, Mk3 and then a Corolla T Sport for when they were all going to the same place. Although occasionally still saw them going in convoy of MR2's. Even when their first born was learning there was a Aygo on the driveway. I think the family really really liked Toyota's.
