I realised I didn't actually say what was mine - my first rally was the 1976 Mintex and seeing all the cars in Dalby had me hooked.....

But I wasn't one to follow the herd so things like this were always good to me, a certain W. Rohrl shown here:

But ultimately after a dark night in Kielder this has to be the one

Michelle is luuuuurvely. She patted me on the head once. I like to think that is the area where my bald patch is growing. Mind you she also scowled at me once aswell. Have you ever been scowled at by an angry woman who has just spent the last few hours fighting a Quattro?

Oh yeah and dont forget 2006 when the Xsara was so dominant Loeb won the title from his bed....

Er...wow.

In the world of rally cars, a Xsara is nowhere. End of. Same with the C4.

If you have to ask why, then you simple havent got the point of it all yet.
Well out of curiosity i will ask why? as if you examine the statistics the Xsara shapes up quite well to the Stratos with equal amount of constructors championships, and in terms of overall championships Citroen is second to Lancia but with a superior amount of drivers championships.Indeed if you count Peugeot,s constructors championships in with Citroens as a PSA group amount of championships they actually beat Lancia.
Based on your dismissal of the Xsara with its strong and enduring WRC showings then i guess you must also dismiss the Subaru Impreza.
With regard Loebs utter dominance of the drivers championship well his record speaks for itself and he has had some stiff competition but best driver with the best team is always going to win.

So what is the "point of it all" if not to win drivers and constructors championships which Citroen have admirably achieved as indeed have Lancia.

This i disagree with entirely, especially when you look back a few years, and see who makkinen was up against when he won his four titles, or kankkunen when he won his titles, rohrl etc. It was a golden age of rallying if you like, up until it ended up with just two manufacturers, and the depth of talent has to a certain extent disappeared, although this year shows promise.

As to the xsara, i dont like it, but if it's your opinion of the best rally car of all time, then thats fine by me, it is after what i wanted, peoples opinions smile

In a thread trying to establish a " best of" i guess statistics at some point will come in to play.Obviously opinions will vary as to what this is as people like different things in a car.
As you had totally dismissed the Xsara and the C4 i guess it would be reasonable to ask you you rationale behind that statement.

After about 1998 nothing really interests me, after the homologation specials dissapered they all look a bit boring to me. Homologation cars are what rallying was all about for me, being able to buy for real a close cousin of the stage hero.

Integrale obviously, but I have a real affection for the Celica Carlos Sainz ST185 rally car, for me THE last sexy rally car, period. I was luck enough to own one, and it was proportioned and pumped up in all the right places force rally car, and the rally cars did quite well I recall....

Ergh.... Isnt this thread all about individual opinions? Its his opinion that the Xsara is the best rally car of all time....

Just because he doesnt agree with you doesnt mean you should make him feel stupid for his.

I’ll give you an explanation.
Too many people here seem to be just thinking of rallying as WRC events. Well, rallying is much more than just WRC events, and this is why no WRC or Group B car is entitled to the greatest rally car title, because, they are simply too expensive and beyond most privateers, and Group B in particular, was also too short in duration. As great as the 206T16E2 was as a rally car, it lasted just two seasons. The Citroen Xsara/C4 is undoubtably the greatest WRC car, the 206T16 probably the greatest Group B car and the Intergale the greatest of the Group A cars.
But, the Escort has to be the greatest of all time, because of it’s sheer longevity. From a club competitor winning a road rally in the 70’s in his almost standard Mexico or RS2000, to a full on Group 4 BDG from Boreham to todays reborn cars in classic rallying, the Escort is king.
Even when Group B assaulted all our senses in the 1980’s, and later on into the Group A days, if you went to any single venue stage rally in the UK or an Irish or Scandanvian rally...........you would still see upteen Escorts being used. That's 43 years as probably the worlds favourite and most used rally car, from basic club competitors to world champions.

Oh, and the worlds toughest and longest ever rally was won by........an Escort.

Well if you like Escorts - there will be plenty of them out in December at the R.A.C Rally.

As for the photos of Rohrl in the Opel Kadett - Peter Smith (father of Guy) uses in one in clubman/Historic Rallying, and in the same colour scheme!!
