Gents,

I am thinking about buying an ex Group A Escort Cosworth shell and putting my own running gear into it. These cars came from Ford Motorsport without VIN numbers. Does anyone know how I can get a VIN number (legally) and get the car registered for the road?

Many thanks

Very good question, I've also thought about this for the future.

Contact VOSA and ask advice.

I'm assuming that

a) you could build a kit car with a combination of new and second hand parts, and it'd be registered as a Q reg (which is actually cool in itself)
b) You could RESHELL a write off and the shell is just treated as a spare part, and you'd get away with transferring the Vin plates ?

Note that FORD will NOT be interested (I once foolishly bought a fiesta car derived van with rear side windows and tried to get it changed to Hatchback instead of Van with side windows on the V5. DVLA said if Ford will agree and Ford said "ER NO!! - but they did write a letter for my insurance explaining the minor differences (harder springs and shit brakes))

You have to SVA it in the same way as you would a kit car I think.

i think the Reyland escort cosworth used a motorpsort shell and that is a non Q road legal car. I think.

good luck.

I would go down the SVA route, either use a donor vehicle for the running gear and get an age related plate ( relating to the donor vehicle age) or use new or reconditioned parts ( keep the receipts as proof) and register it as a new car. If you use remanufactured suspension and brakes the engine and gearbox can be simply rebuilt and you'll still get a new 2007 plate.

See www.totalkitcar.com for an excellent write up on how to register your car.

Cheers,

Tony

You'll have to apply for a registration and put it through SVA. It is basically a car built from bits in the eyes of the law.

An unscrupulous person might buy a wrecked or ratty Escort and build the Cossie bits up with the old cars registration, VIN etc, but I know a PHer wouldn't do something so terrible......
