Didn't Rudy Eggenberger run these prior to his association with the RS500?Neil Parsec said:
This car was mentioned in Ths Sunday Times at the weekend. It was entered into the 1981 Dakar rally, following a bet the driver,Thierry de Montcorgé, made with Christian Dior about the viability of racing a Rolls Royce through Africa. Fitted with a 5.7litre Chevrolet V8, two Toyota Land Cruiser axles and a 400l fuel tank it weighed just 1400kg!http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/classic-car-pa...
The Rolls Royce which wasn't what it seemed reminded me of this car which shows how flimsy motor racing rules can be.
The Churchill silhouette series raced in the late 80s or early 90s and I remember them from Snetterton. I think the regulations were that cars had to be the silouette of a road car & I think that as long as they adhered to that they could do pretty much what they liked. This car was driven by John Churchill whos company sponsored the series and it looked like the whole series was a way of him showing off his very fancy car. IIRC it was a Formula 2 car under plastic bodywork, he declared it to be Lancia Stratos. It won every race I saw it in & normally held the outright lap record at Snetteton (the next fastest cars that visited were Formula 3). Then Churchill sold the car but it continued to race but the new owner declared it to be a silouette of a different car, an AC 3000ME IIRC. How can the same car be claimed to be two different cars?

I worked on that car for the following owner! He raced it as a Stratos but did own a similar set up with AC ME3000 bodywork on it.The Churchill silhouette series raced in the late 80s or early 90s and I remember them from Snetterton. The stratos car was a March 832 chassis with BMW M12 engine and Hewland FG300 (dodgy memory??) gearbox.
The car was later returned to 832 original bodywork with the carbon top section to the tub refitted. I have pictures of before and after somewhere but all on old skool photo paper so will have to scan them!!

The Mazda 323 Sport 4 Prototype designed to compete in Grp A/B, loosely based on the Grp A homologated 323 GT-R came too late for the Grp B party.
Just two development cars were produced
I have a 323 GTX/GTR track day car(pic in profile) was toying with the idea of making a kit similar to that, seeing as it needs a respray anyway.Just two development cars were produced

Here's a good one I've dragged up from the murky depths of my memory - this Jeep won a WRC round!

I hope nobody paid out on the bet bearing in mind that it wasn't a Roller at all! As well as the above the chassis was a spaceframe.
This one was used in a rally, the 1970 World Cup
James May mentioned on the TG christmas special the Shadow was used once in rallying. This one was used in a rally, the 1970 World Cup
There's a book called "Mexico or Bust" by Mark Kahn which has a certain amount to say about this - the car was entered by a bloke called Bill Bengry who seems to have been a hugely talented and creative "bush mechanic" type engineer. Apparently as well as keeping the Shadow going with an inspired series of bodges (up to and including replacing a broken wheel hub with something fashioned from a slice out of a log of wood roughly the right diameter) he was also responsible for keeping a lot of other competitors running and carried on with the rally as a sort of unofficial support vehicle after the Rolls was excluded from the event for missing a time control.
The book throws light on a number of other unlikely vehicles - the car Kahn himself was a crew member in (which missed the finish by a mere 600 miles) was a BMC 1800 "land crab" and BMC entered Austin Maxis for a start.

I am happy to be corrected, but pleased that there were a few grains of truth behind what I remembered. I never saw these two cars race against each other which was a real shame because they were both unbeatable every time I saw them. It would be interesting to see those pictures. The stratos car was a March 832 chassis with BMW M12 engine and Hewland FG300 (dodgy memory??) gearbox.

After Monkeys blog on retro rally cars I've been watching loads of group B & rallying on youtube then I came across this.

A restored Lancia ECV using original parts - I only ever saw pics of this car after group B (& thne group S ) was canned, so it is amazing to see it in action.
