There has been a bloody great pothole on the A127 as you approach the Fortune of War west bound. Must have been there a good months now.

Other roads are like mini bomb sites and you have to swerve along the roads to avoid them.
If its the one just where the speed camera is and in the left hand lane, thats been there since late 2020 - i commute daily between Baz and Hertford. Ive reported it several times on the Essex highways website and theyve never attempted to repair it that im aware of.

In my area of Surrey, one of the local Conservative councillors is still of the opinion that potholes are a great / useful speed calming measure rolleyes As a result, in advance of the local elections, a couple of people round here have put up signs supporting Labour / Lib Dem that state potholes are NOT speed calming measures hehe

Regarding the upcoming local elections the Lib Dems round here did a pretty decent flyer recently that pretty much tore into the local Conservatives failings in our area over the last decade - especially with regards to basic road / pavement maintenance, over valued purchases of office buildings for conversion to prison cells (sorry mini apartments / flats), shop space, etc. Yet the Conservatives hit back claiming it's all lies and the figures claimed are wrong - yet it appears they've used figures that go back as far as 2019 to make it look like they've done a better job on road maintenance / potholes than they actually have, plus they've also used the figures for the entirety of Surrey CC, rather than ones in our own local area, to ensure more skewing on their, alleged, success rate at repairs rolleyes

Back to the potholes round here, what's been happening recently is that clearly the CC are sending out a contractor to check the damage / reported areas and spray paint them with some luminous paint to make them more noticeable rolleyes Unfortunately it seems that they've also been instructed, on some smaller potholes, cracks, etc, to open them up more / widen them so that when the tarmac crew arrive (whenever that may be in a few days, weeks, etc), they have a bigger area to patch (like a square / rectangle) rather than a smaller mini hole - which isn't great as all they're now doing is creating even bigger rutts in the road to avoid banghead

Seen this on the news yesterday, you have to climb in to potholes now to get them repaired.

Try reporting it to the Police - I've found it works (three times now) - Just rattle enough cages and you may get a result?

Essex Highways are investing less than half the annual amount required just to ‘stay still’, exacerbated even more by inflationary pressures. The value of annual deterioration, is modelled at £77.7m per year across Essex. This is compared to Essex County Council’s investment of £36.675m per year to fix those wear and tear issues such as potholes.

Ringway Jacob is the prime contractor for Essex Highways. "Ringway Jacobs Secures Full Five-Year Extension to Essex County Council Integrated Highway Partnership" https://www.ringway-jacobs.co.uk/ From companies House:- https://find-and-update.company-information.servic... The story continues. Who owns Ringway Jacobs ? https://www.datanyze.com/companies/ringway-jacobs/... Who are they ? Ringway Jacobs is jointly owned and fully supported by Eurovia Group Ltd and Jacobs One Ltd as 50:50 shareholders with combined resources of 9,000 people within the UK and supported globally by shareholding companies of Vinci Group. Who is Vinci Group ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinci_SA Vinci (corporately styled VINCI) is a French concessions and construction company founded in 1899 as Société Générale d'Enterprises. Its head office is in Nanterre, in the western suburbs of Paris. The thought come to me, because of the huge backlog of road maintenece Essex roads require, it would be cost-effective to take it back inhouse, thus cutting out a lot of wasted money as profit to this useless company. Despte Ringway Jacob claims on their website how technically clever they are, from personal experience, their road repair efforts border on almost criminally negligent, and appalling.

In the past I have suggested that local authorities (or groups of authorities) take road maintenance back in-house.

This was poo-pooed by a poster on the inside as crazy talk.
I don’t think it is.

Something stops this happening. Presumably one of the reasons is that more staff cost money. But so does handing over millions every year to contractors.

Here's an example of a 'repair' by Norfolk County Council - I saw the truck, so unless the contractors are using the NCC truck, it's them.
Not exactly great, as an amateur I possibly could have done better.

Jesus, that is a joke.
My area of Surrey is terrible now, between Epsom and Tadworth. I've started commuting on my large adventure bike as it rides the bumps much better than my scooter - I sometimes get fired out of the seat on that. I had Surrey CC cough up £180 for two tyres on my E-class destoyed by hitting a submerged pothole. Actual cost was £278 but they allowed for wear and took three months to pay out. Luckily the rims weren't damaged.
I like the Merc but I am seriously considering switching to an SUV, potholes being one of the main reasons.

Pot holes round here are awful too. Especially bad in the rain when you cannot see them.
I think the way the council evade paying out if any damage does occur, is to circle them with paint etc

I tend to report them straight to the council, and they usually act upon it, esp if lots of others have...

That's ridiculous!

Is it worth sending that with a letter to your local councillor?

Already done:-

The Highways team clearly don’t have a very high standard, as the attached photos are of their own work – perhaps the Management are totally unaware?
The repeated ‘fixing’ of holes confirms the situation – maybe someone at the top needs firing (without the golden handshake)

The local councillor has responded:-

I will forward your email to the Highways Engineer for comment and get back to you.

I'll post the response if it ever arrives.FP

Quality job hehe Amusingly i drove past something similar to that today near Camberley (Surrey). From what i could tell as i crawled by, they'd obviously started doing similar to the above (chucking the tarmac around the area of the drain that was previously sunk / cracked), but then decided, "nah, that's not enough" and just completely covered the entire metal drain cover laugh

Passing by the same area (but going in the other direction) later in the day, after we'd had a couple of hours of consistent rain, the unsurprising and obvious side effect of that repair was the nice big puddle of standing water due to the drain now being covered with tarmac rolleyes

It also turns out that in Surrey Heath, Conservative councillors just the other week voted through a 50% reduction in the roads / repair budget for the next 2 years in order to "redirect" the other 50% into "other under-budgeted and stretched services" - but havent actually said what those services are banghead

Essex County Council did similarly. They re-directed part of the road repair budget to 'deal' with the cost of living rises ( they forgot to say how that would work as well ) which the Tories were responsible for in the first place.

Is that just a fancy way of saying "our pensions"?

More than likely social services or planning. Both are on their knees. The way councils are funded needs changing council tax is limited by 5% increases, we all know everything has gone up by more than 5% this year.
