Nothing much to update, up to 141K miles now and no issues.

I did fit a new cabin filter which was a 2 minute job. Here's the old one:

Car's booked into the garage next week... the power steering hydraulic hose is leaking so we shall see what the garage say about a repair. Until then, driving with no power steering ha!

Looks like the power steering issue is terminal. The £300 pipe it's leaking from is buried underneath the DPF and the gearbox and everything else so it's not economical to repair it.

It goes on Gumtree this week

Good plan. A power steering rack issue is what wrote mine off in the end. It is possible to get the rack out from the inner wheel arch though, gearbox doesn't have to come out. Appreciate your issue is slightly different to mine.

Interestingly enough I had an A4 Convertible based on exactly the same problem and that had power steering issues as well. This was one of the (many) issues it had that meant it ended up on eBay as spares or repairs.

As someone who has run sheds for nearly 20 years, I find Audi's are the most needy old cars to run.

Freudian slip? hehe

Is an absence of power steering an MOT failure or just really inconvenient?

Ha, I REALLY hated that car, I was so happy to see it drive away and not be my problem anymore despite the thousands I had lost.

In my case the pump was making a god awful noise and needed to be topped up with fluid every few days. It still kind of worked, but if you have ever driven a car with defective power steering you will realise how difficult and dangerous it is.

Honestly, no idea. I'll see what budget I have in a couple of weeks and then go from there. I'm thinking £4K should see me into something half decent(?)

My 2002 BMW E46 had a split in a PAS pipe and intermittent PAS was certainly interesting between top-ups. But not the end of the world as my Rover P6B 3500S didn't have PAS!

I paid £315 to get a new hose fitted in 2016 because I loved the car, and I'd spent over £400 on a cooling system refresh the year before.

While your potential bill might be bigger I'm not sure spending up to £4K on another future Shed will actually cost less in the long run. Sometimes it's better to keep the car you know than inherit someone elses' problems!

As Mr Tidy says, sometimes better the devil you know? I spent £1200 on my A3 last year. The master cylinder had gone so it made sense put a clutch and flywheel init at the same time. Can’t remember the miles then but it’s on 213k now.

The bill hurt on an old car but cheaper than buying something else. I do want a new car but really have no idea what to get!

How many miles a year do you do? Guessing a lot with you having diesel?

Yeah, we'll have to see I suppose. And I do 20K miles a year, so a diesel made sense MPG wise although all things considered (DPF issues etc) I reckon a decent petrol would be a better alternative
