Had enough of the Elise then?

It really depends on what you going to get. If its a boxster then I have no idea (sorry). As far as the 911's go you've got to decide what you want:
964,Turbo,993,993 C2 or C4,993 RS, 993 Twin Turbo, or even a 996.
I chose a 993 LHD Turbo last year (37 grand) from Germany in the end, though I'm seriously thinking about selling it and getting a 993RS or a GT2 if I can stretch the budget. If you don't mind driving a LHD there is ALOT of money to be saved, if not then you've got to look in the normal places - Autotrader etc. If you going for a slightly older model (pre-94) then it's worth getting hold of Porsche Post (Brit Porker Club magazine) as these have loads of older cars that have been lovingly looked after and are well worth a look.

I won't go for a C4 unless you get a Twin Turbo, as you'll miss the steering feel to much , especially if you're coming from an Elise. Don't know much about the boxster other than what I hear. I suppose it depends if you're going to use the car on the track?
What kind of budget have you got?

As for the specialist, get Porsche World magazine or Porsche Post as these are rammed with adverts for garages. You'll soon get a feel who is good or not. Personally I've not heard any bad stories about specialist garages compared to official garages as they tend to be more passionate about it.

If you live near Coventry/Birmingham/NEC area... go to meridan..as it is not offical porsche dealer but it sell only porsche and it been around for 25+ years and my dad have bought his porker from there and it is damn good place...it got 356/911/924/944/boxster once 959 (i think!)etc

Am I wrong to lust after a 993 Turbo 4 (Twin Turbo)... why are you selling... just for steering feel?

How does it compare to:

- 964 RS

- 993 C2

and 964 Turbo 2 3.3/3.6

If you've driven any of the others, please let me know, as all are being considered as a forerunner to a turbo 4, and it may be better to stick to one of these or even save for the 993 RS.

But don't go to Hanley Porsche centre in Stoke on Trent...they are not very good...all they think about making a money and doesn't give a toss about the car...

No you definitly not wrong to lust after a 993TT. I have to say its the most stupendous road I've ever had the privalge to drive. (Even a Ferrari 360 felt slow). The acceleration just never stops - in an instant you'll be doing ridiculas speeds. It has an amazing amount of grip and that includes when it chucking it down. Its built very very well, and you can feel it. Its also surprising good on a track as well, and will keep up with a 993RS.
There's loads of good things about it - my only real gripe is the steering feel - it is very good but.. If you coming from a tiv or bemer or something then you won't notice much difference, but I came from an Elise which obviously is on a different level. It not as half as light and the steering lock from point to point is very large. I miss the light/quick steering response of the Elise. I may just keep the car and get a smaller steering wheel and change the steering rack, but I'm finding I'm doing more and more track days, and a set of tyres are not cheap for this car. So I'm think about lots of different options, but most likely I will a) keep the car b) sell it and get a caterham and keep the money until my job is bit more secure THEN look at getting another porker again.

If you want the car as a road car the the 993TT has to be one of the ultamate cars to live with every day (as I do). It great on so many different levels.

Funnly enough I've been in all the above cars. A friend has a 964 with he has replace the suppension - its very quick around the track and is a nice car. As for all 964 the clutch is quite heavy, steering feel is nice and well as the interier. Lots of good examples about. I've not been in a 964 RS but I imagin it being the same but more focused.

I know someone who has a 964 Turbo 2, which has been prepared by TWS. This is a very fast car (as fast as mine), but alas I've not driven it, so I don't know how it feels. I once again imagin it being similar to the 964 but just a lot faster.

The 993 C2 is noticably more of a modern car than the 964, the clutch is much more easy to use (but more heavy than the 993TT). I've driven one, but not in anger so can't comment too much. Talking from experience in my car, they are a lot more stable than the 964's and throwable (though always be carefull, esp. with the C2's).

It depends what you want ie a weekend car or a everyday car.
If its a weekend car then get something like a 964 RS or Turbo 2, as they'll give you as much fun for less money. If though you are going to use it everyday then I would consider a 993 derivative (with the 993TT being the ultimate).

Anyhow, just go out and try them for yourself , you'll soon get an idea. What are you driving at the moment?

All porsche 993/996 etc all look the same..no difference...I don't like new porsche..I prefer '80 porker as it is the last of 911

Hi Bosshog,

Cheers for the info - I drive a Lotus Carlton at the moment. V quick but not too good around corners, and can be expensive to run. Had a few Porsches before and driven 3.2 911s/964 C2. I used to own a couple of Caterhams, and got the LC as an everyday car. However, I came to conclusion that one car can't do it all, so got a second car for commuting - nice sensible Rover 414!!!

Next performance car will be mainly weekend, occasional weekday, occasional track use. 964 RS probably hits the spot, but silly money asked. 993 C2 can be picked up for same (approx 23k). Would like the Turbo 2 still, although experience with LC says that Turbo cars are expensive to maintain. My new clutch cost 1500 quid etc, and misfires can be like a common cold unless fuelling and ignition completely sorted. Cheers for advice. I'm keeping an open mind at the moment, but tempting V8 Esprits and Ferrari 348s for the same money are not an option - I have learnt to love build quality and reliability the hard way.

Tuscan V8 - the 993 was the last of the true 911s, the 996 is completely new, not a strict evolution.

I know what you mean, although if you drive a 1989 3.2 vs 1990 C2 you'll stop wanting the late eighties ones! Poles apart - much improved.

Looks wise never liked the concertina bumpers, fuchs wheels or champagne/brown paint scheme, either. Horses for courses, I suppose.

Been on 1991 C2 but I rather my Dad's '81 911 turbo which is why I prefer the '80 because of the fuch, flared arches etc..i think it simply gorgeous!
