I am very much a car/driving/petrol enthusiast, but I still don't view an R8 as being a supercar, make of that what you will.
Well I'm sure you are not alone in such self identification. What do I make of it? With regard to the vehicle, it really depends what you do consider a supercar. It's the relative classification here and the reasons behind it that is interesting.
And as to driving, there's a bit of a spectrum here too. Are you Bealach na Ba, or more a King's Road type of wheelman?

I love the comment "barried TT" though. It's these sorts of responses and the psychology behind them that make participating in threads like this worthwhile
I don't think you can know the psychology behind internet responses without talking to the poster in person, or it's just speculation.popeyewhite said:

For any individual, yes, you are right of course you can't know the full picture. But it's still a data point, a facet, and after enough posts, themes start to emerge.Hedgeman said:

I'm not here to give you a hard on from reading my views on what is or what isn't a supercar
That's fine, no need, and no further info needed. I'd already given you the benefit of the doubt and marked you down (optimistically) as King's Road in a Mondial MKnight702 said:
You question the driving enthusiasm of the majority of people? Why, most people on the road haven’t a clue about driving and care even less, they see a car as a disposable white good.
This is why the emotional element of supercarness is important, the majority of people would recognise a Lamborghini or Ferrari and automatically associate it with something special, the fact that it isn’t necessarily as fast as a modern hot hatch wouldn’t register as they do not care about cars. You will see Dad in his new Zafailure point a 348 out to his kids, he probably wouldn’t even register that the Audi with the loud exhaust isn’t just a Barried TT since he sees Audis everywhere.
How would you know if the Dad with his kids in the “Zafailure” doesn’t have Ferrari at home, and he and the kids are supercar enthusiasts, but thinks R8s aren’t supercars so doesn’t bother pointing them out? This is why the emotional element of supercarness is important, the majority of people would recognise a Lamborghini or Ferrari and automatically associate it with something special, the fact that it isn’t necessarily as fast as a modern hot hatch wouldn’t register as they do not care about cars. Basically none of us know Jack beyond our own shaded prejudices of what others think or don’t think.
Whether a high performer prestige car is a “supercar” or not is purely personal and no one else can change that perception.
Hey guys,
OP here. I’ll probably go for a test drive in a F12 and see how easy it feels to be a daily driver vs my Aventador. I’ll then probably sell the 360 as I don’t think I’ll drive it all that much with a F12/Aventador around.
If the F12 isn’t really that much easier as a daily vs the Aventador, then I’ll probably get a McLaren 750s.
Will probably steer clear of the Porsches for now, not least because of the massive waiting lists on new ones and the premium on the used ones just now.
Cheers!

+1 As they say, judge not according to appearance.
My wife started having a nice chat over dinner with a lovely, more elderly lady at the Hampton Court concourse this year.
Turned out that the car she’d bought from the US, which she never mentioned, was absolutely stunning and won.
She also never mentioned that she and her husband have so many fabulous cars that they opened a museum for them.

I question it because I would assert that real enthusiasts of a thing establish a hierarchy that classifies based on the merits of the thing itself, not how it is perceived by uninformed masses. Unless of course the most important thing to them is actually the opinion of the uninformed. And this thread, since it's on a car enthusiasts forum presumably has the opinions of car "enthusiasts", not "most people".

I dropped out of this discussion some time ago but had to pop back in when I read that :-) (both your reply, and "barried TT) :-)I love the comment "barried TT" though. It's these sorts of responses and the psychology behind them that make participating in threads like this worthwhile
Skimming through a few of the replies I was starting to get a more solid picture of how people define "supercars", and it is so definitely in the eye of the beholder, but the moment I realised it is impossible to define in a way that pleases everyone is when I read, twice, I think, the Lambo Hurrican "isn't a supercar". Now the ONLY way I can possibly think that people have come to that conclusion, that the £215,000 Lambo Hurrican isn't a supercar (badge and all! - and they don't make small family cars too!) is.... that it shares the R8 V10 engine, and therefore they'd be dangerously close to putting them both in the same boat . It's way too funny if I'm right :-)
Look at it!!!!

Ok...let's forget about what constitutes a supercar or not as this has been discussed a million times on pistonheads and no universal definition has ever been reached.
For those who think an F12 is an everyday car...I really would like to see you driving it this morning with frost on the ground!!!

...also, every day means 10k miles a year ... how much will it cost to run a F12...nobody knows as it has not been done!!!!
These cars are not designed to do this type of mileage...they will fall apart in no time....
Same for Lambo or Maclaren...they cannot be used every day or you will be grippled by consumable costs and the car will be most of the time at the garage getting fixed...

Puts hand in the air.
At 9am in rush hr traffic across crappy roads from just outside Reading via Wallingford and Didcot this morning. 0C, ground mist/fog conditions. On PZeros
And she did the evening run up from Devon last night.
I just dumped her at Gatwick for a cpl of days. She will drive back to Devon on Friday.
I think I’ve put 5000 miles on her since I picked her up in July.
But then I’m also the bloke who put 60,000 miles on an Alfa 4C from new in 3.5yrs (inc a yr of Covid) as a daily driver.
