A Metallic Green TT manual with some reasonable mods was advertised recently for less than 9k, it is amazing that other JDM models with even more rust issues are fetching tens of thousands of pounds. The engine bay is a major PITA, but still…

I have been driving mine on holiday trips since 2021, it is surprisingly good for long distance(12+ hours) journeys.

Nice, is that a 99 spec or just the bumper?

I had one back in 06 I think. Wonderful thing. UK spec twin turbo manual with targa roof. Went to a guy in the army who took it to Germany where it was written off in floods.

I remember being terrified of how complicated it looked under the bonnet, and the lack of space!

There was a video online somewhere that I shot/was in when we all did a run down the Brighton. Fun times.

First car I did 150+ in, down the M3 with the roof off.

It is not 99 spec, just the front end and the rear lights. I also have the rear wing and only the side skirts are missing, but i think they were optional on the version R.

Ah that's what made me ask, it was the side skirts but I couldn't work out why it looked slightly different. Best bits to change anyway the front bumper and lights, I had a set of replica 99 spec lights on mine they update the rear perfectly. I do love all the little options you get with Jap cars, if I'd have kept mine the next bit would have been the illuminated rear panel but they were (and probably are more so now) hard to get hold of originals.

Looks lovely in red, I have serious respect for anyone that works on their own.

Here's a great read on Jalopnik of a buy who bought one and then went about repairing it himself.

https://jalopnik.com/heres-exactly-what-it-cost-to...

I still think it's far easier owning one in the US as they sold many more over there and getting parts is a lot easier, plus if you get stuck there's more shops who can work on them. But this sums up pretty well how it would be owning one now which is a part I guess of why the very best ones command such a high price. You're paying to hopefully avoid all this future pain rofl

Thanks for linking, that's a really good article.

Many of the issues were familiar to me from a decade of RX-7 ownership.

I think the Z32 is looking better than ever, I'm glad they're now seeing the investment of time money and effort to get them back into good shape so they can actually drive properly.

On the subject of rotaries, I just watched Rob Dahms video of building that 12-rotor. He almost makes replacing the apex seals seem easy!

I had an 8yr old UK twin turbo manual for 6 months.
Loved it but it was made of wafers, broke the gearbox, burnt out the clutch and both rear tyres ..... nothing to do with my driving, honest biggrin
Fastest I've ever driven a car too,145 on a private road that looked a lot like the M6

If that is the 99 spec panel between the rear lights, i do have it on mine. I may post a readers car thread sometime next year when i complete some more work on it, mostly restoration.

All JDM heroes up to the GTR 34 are getting on a bit and it sounds banal, but if you want a really presentable car you must really keep on top of maintenance. The aforementioned work planned for next year will cost me 4000-4500 pounds(or much more if the car was still in UK) and it wont be the end of it. I am not doing any tuning, just trying to keep it in a good mechanical and cosmetic condition. If this is money pit, then all similar age Porsches, BMWs, etc. are too and it is a pittance compared to the upkeep of a GTR.

Due to the historically low values of the Z32 it is very hard to find a truly mint car at any price and a complete nuts and bolts restoration would be well over 100 000 pounds, if done today and if it is done by indies. No JDM classic apart from unicorns like the 400R, Z-Tune, Type-R MK2 and 22B is worth doing it, it would be cheaper to buy a brand new manual Supra A90 or even a LC500 V8.

Yeah that's the part, looks ace.

Completely agree with you about the cost of upkeep etc, especially when compared to other brands. Over on the UK 300ZX forum I remember there's a guy, FunkySi I think is his username. He has a pearl white 99 spec zed which he keeps basically brand new. He does use it well, but everything on it has been replaced or preserved. Think he still has it but it was a thing of beauty.

Hence me saying if I ever got another it'd be a fresh Jap import 99 spec. But I know I'd have to pay the price for it.

The listed prices for sporty JDM cars are inflated by johnny come lately back street dealers because a few American youtube content creators paid over the odds to import some Supras and R3x GTR's once the 25+ year rule came into play.

I can tell you first hand that if you try selling a Twin turbo 300ZX or a 3000GT, i.e anything that is not a NSX, JZA80 Supra or BCNR** GTR, you will be lucky to get £5K-£6K in this frugal UK market.

Too many 'I always wanted one' dreamers with a banger money expect a car that once rivalled the Porsche 911 which has sat in the UK for 20+ years to be rust free with all the major upkeep recently done.

Exactly, the 300ZX is still cheap to buy and it is a buyers market as long as you are aware of the 911 level running costs of all JDM heroes of that era. The age of these cars makes it impossible to run them on a budget anymore, but i think that the bigger issue is that lots of them seem poorly modded and unattractive(the Silvia is the worst for back street tuning and the NSX is the cleanest). Looking at the Z32 selection for sale on Ebay nothing is catching my eye, not even for 25k.

Yeah agreed, the only ones I've seen that appeal are the fresh imports. HJA and Torque GT get some lovely examples but they're the pricey ones now.

This one is almost identical to my old one in spec (except black):
