Funk thanks very much for your guide
All went smoothly except a couple of issues:
Already had an Android USB driver so had to remove that and delete the software for it to use the bootloader version
On trying to install Appbrain for the first time it said not enough space
Have googled that and found (for me) the solution was to reduce ext4 to under 1GB (it was 2.5) - I used Gparted again but just used the resize feature to shrink it
Thanks again
Thanks to Funk too but unfortunately mine didn't go as smoothly as cuneus. Even though I had Funk's very thorough guide, I had issues from the getgo. The SD card just couldn't be read by my laptop, had to do it via my media centre which is hooked up to my TV.All went smoothly except a couple of issues:

Also doing the root didn't quite go to plan, but I sorted that out. Finally sorted out the SD card issues and even though I'd backed up with appbrain and did a titanium backup, couldn't restore apps etc, no biggie as all my contacts/emails etc are on exchange and I use touchdown for that. So just had to remember my apps and reinstall.
My Asus tablet has a lovely backup/restore feature via the market, wish HTC had one too.
Anyhow, I can't wait to enjoy the 1gb space for my apps
Again big thank you to Funk for explaining the process in laymans terms.

A few months ago there was a thread or post on here where a poster made his own car cradle for his desire using a few bits from ebay, does anyone remember it?
I've just replaced my Otterbox commuter case with the Casemate barely there so i'm keen to get a decent cradle for the car, i seem to remember the cradle in question was suitable for use with the Casemate case.

Superglue.
Works a treat. I've got a silicone style skin and theres just enough give in the hard case to allow me to put it straight in.

o2 sent me a txt earlier stating they were going to cap my internet due to excessive usage.
I've had the unlimted web bolt on for about 5 years, before they changed their policy.
Can I do anything about this?
I'd be telling them that you have an 'unlimited' bolt-on and that if it's not truly unlimited then they're guilty of mis-selling and you'd like to be refunded what you've paid and given your PAC code so you can move to another network.I've had the unlimted web bolt on for about 5 years, before they changed their policy.

Hope the walk-through was helpful (and for anyone else who's thinking of doing it).
Im getting tempted to root mine now, although i'm seriously worried about messing it up. The only thing annoying about this phone is the low memory issues which rooting solves.
I'm not that concerned with the backing up side of things as i use google for all my contacts/calender and i use appbrain for my apps.
Am i been paranoid?

Go for it, the low meemory has been bugging me for months, but I just was't prepared for the whoel rooting process etc.I'm not that concerned with the backing up side of things as i use google for all my contacts/calender and i use appbrain for my apps.

Since Funk took the plunge and put up his help guide I decided to give it a go. Overall I knew it would be a PITA at times but the end produc tis well worth it.
Apart from SD card issues the other tip would be the steps in getting unrevoked onto the Desire. You need to uninstall HTC sync, but not the other HTC drivers etc. Also you need to turn the phone on, run unrevoked and then connect the phone to the pc via USB, then unrevoked does it's stuff.
For me I use Touchdown, which has all my emails, contact and calendar etc. But I still had to re-install al my apps manually as appbrain just didn't work for me. No biggie, but added another hour of fiddling (which I enjoy) to the overall process.
In conclusion, DO IT

Overall, it's definitely been worth it - the phone is better than new, faster, the battery lasts much longer and I've no longer got 'megabyte-anxiety'. I'm also not having to decide which apps I want 'least' in order to squeeze things onto the phone.
On the AppBrain side, I logged in through the site to ensure that it pushed the apps to the newly-installed phone rather than sync an empty phone. If you've been able to install Titanium Backup after rooting, you wouldn't even need AppBrain. I only used it as a 'Plan B' when I couldn't get root without doing a factory reset.

I'll give it a try. Cheers bud.Just be polite, firm and keep moving up the 'line' until you find someone who's authorised to deal with your complaint about their policy changes.

It's amazing what can be negotiated. I have my Desire free on Flext30 (for which I'm only paying £10.50 a month instead of the usual £30) and I also have a 3Gb data allowance after I kicked up a stink that I was paying for the Mobile Broadband bolt-on (£5 a month) which gave me 'unlimited' mobile broadband which they were about to kick down to just 500Mb/month.
Just be polite, firm and keep moving up the 'line' until you find someone who's authorised to deal with your complaint about their policy changes.
Well I'm quite frankly amazed.Just be polite, firm and keep moving up the 'line' until you find someone who's authorised to deal with your complaint about their policy changes.
I logged onto the web chat and spoke to an adviser. They initially claimed that I did not have the unlimited web bolt on as they had stopped offering it. I asked them what exactly it was I had - threw in a few sentences regarding policy changes and what do you know, I have my data access back.
I think I was using roughly 5-6GB a month as I stream alot of videos. Do you think I'm taking the piss?
- Edited to change data usage.*

Root sequence
FunkI followed your order and it worked very well for me - t hanks very much.
My problems have been in trying to restore my previous apps. I don't have many that I'm heartbroken to lose, but some issues:
I downloaded SMS backup that sent the SMS straight to Gmail - there doesn't seem to be a restore option. I now realise there was a similar app that backed them to SD card - that might have been the better move.
I have titanium download - can't seem to restore apps with it.
I also used AppBrain - I can see my old apps but none of the previous settings. Doesn't seem to be a clear way of sending them to the phone, from the phone.
Seem weird to get this far and get stuck on the seemingly easy bit of restoring everything... Any ideas.

Damn you all. I'm itching to try other ROMs, just out of curiosity.
You gits.
It's easy enough to do, Nandroid backup first so that you can undo everything in one go without having to mess around, then flash the new ROM and see what you think. You've done the hard bit already. You gits.
If you are looking for a suggestion, I like Oxygen. It's a stock Gingerbread ROM with minimal messing and I actually prefer it now to HTC Sense.
