Well well well, history, eh?
My old Desire started to become unreliable at about 2 years and 30 seconds old, just out of warranty, so I flogged it on eBay (with all the issues listed.)
Orange provided me with a Sony Xperia U, which was, without peer, the worst piece of tech I have ever bought in my entire life. I struggled on with it for about six months (it was on a 2-year contract) before caving in and buying a HTC One V, sim-free, which was a wonderful 'phone.
Sadly, that went wrong at about six months old so I bought a Moto G just before Christmas last year. That was rooted and had a custom ROM put on it a few months back and it's everything I need in a 'phone.
Yes, the original HTC Desire was a game-changer and gave the iPhone some stiff competition. I think it was the 'phone on which Android finally became a serious player in the marketplace, and must have given Steve Jobs a fair few sleepless nights.
Oli.

Moved my Desire on to a friend, with whom it's still doing good service! I moved on to a Sensation XE, rooted almost instantly and changed ROMs regularly, and a year ago to an LG G2, which I rooted as soon as I got it but I've never felt the need to change from the shipped ROM - although I am considering getting a Lollipop ROM on there soon.
I sold the Desire after I got a Sensation XE, that worked flawless for 2 years before I upgraded to the One M8 which again I cant fault and seems to be the only phone that's persuading my friends to drop either the iphone or Samsung. I still have the Sensation as a back up as I regretted selling the Desire when I started working for myself for a bit and wanted another number for that purpose.
Well water obviously finally got to something that matters in my Nexus 4 and the screen went mad. It now has a dead spot across the bottom. left it in the container of rice above the boiler cupboard but I fear it's not going to recover. 48hours since it got wet.
So back on the spare Desire today. Very retro it feels too!
Once thing that does strike though, feels much better to use one handed! Have managed to squeeze most of the apps I use daily onto it with a little space to spare. won't pair to the car bluetooth for some reason though.
Near the end of my 2 years with three so will have to see what they say of the 4 doesn't recover. See if it's worth the £30 on insurance to send away for repair or not, in the meantime I've stepped back a few years!

I have a Z1 compact for that reason. I prefer to have a small phone plus a tablet rather than a single mid-sized device. The waterproofing comes in hand too

Lots of scare stories about people doing much less with it, then having Sony refuse to repair it as they suggested that the covers must have been open. Certainly not in my case - magnetic chargers for home and car mean I don't ever open the flaps.
Fortunately 6 weeks in rice took care of all the water and it's been working as normal since. But I'm slightly leery of waterproofing claims since, and won't be treating it as a full blown underwater accessory.
Silver, chuck it in the rice and forget about it for a fortnight. I wouldn't write it off until less than that.
