I have heard of the butchers paying before, what did they do with the tails? Was it some form of incentive to reduce the numbers and the butcher paid the fee?
I heard of someone on the Norfolk broads buying a house for cash after there was a bounty on some invasive rat thing and his dad used to hunt but became a sort of intermediary.

I think you mis understood the post.
I said I had seen people hit a coin in a tree at a distance I was not sure I could hit the coin with an air rifle when I was not In a rested position.
The 50m was another sentence and I was explaining that I would not take a shot at a rat at over 50m
OK, fair comment, sorry I did misunderstand. I said I had seen people hit a coin in a tree at a distance I was not sure I could hit the coin with an air rifle when I was not In a rested position.

I don't bother shooting squirrels as we are miles from the nearest area which still has reds. Sadly lots of rats here (near a school where they have a constant food source of crisps and everything else the kids drop) so frequently shooting rats at night with NV which is also rather fun.

Squirrels are also detrimental to song birds and young trees. (But also play a role in spreading nuts and growing new trees).I don't bother shooting squirrels as we are miles from the nearest area which still has reds. I do a fair bit of rat shooting. I use a thermal spotter and then NV scope with laser IR. I enjoy being out in the pitch black on my own and seeing all the other wildlife. I don’t like to hurt animals but I know the damage and disease the rats cause and there is a skill to be learned.

I can't quite understand why anyone would go to the hassle of shooting rats in such a secluded location... Evanivitch said:
