Hi,

Has anyone here actually scrapped a car via the ULEZ scheme and been paid? Is there any advice that you’d give to someone starting out on the process?

The application is for the mother. Prices for her car on here and Ebay suggest £1,500 max, whereas she should get £2,000 from the scrappage scheme (please correct me if I am missing something?).

She’s had enough of paying £12.50 to leave the drive and there is no talking her out of this. Besides which, we all know that scrapping a 2001 Honda with 60K miles is the right way to protect the environment rolleyes

Do you have experience? Was it a bureaucratic nightmare?

She'll be lucky to get £1,500 for a 2001 1.7 Civic Coupe with 60K on the clock. She lives on the other side of London to me, and it won't be easy for me to sell it for her as I live in an area that has tight parking restrictions. She's feeling stressed out by the Ulez and I just want the least hassle for her.

The MOT comes up on 12th of Jan, and car needs an MOT to be eligible for scrap scheme.

60K on a Honda is barely run in. I don't feel good about junking a car like that, but I am not going to get into an argument with her over it. It's her decision and it's what she wants. If the scheme is a nightmare, please let me know why?

I notice the wording is 'up to £2000', not £2000. I suspect they will offer no more than she would get selling it elsewhere.

ULEZ is purely about local air quality, and nothing else. Not the wider environment, not co2. I suspect a 2001 Honda will actually be worse for local air quality than a 2007 Bentley.

I can't believe that car isn't quite desirable in Honda fanboy circles - they still had a cable throttle and hydraulic steering at that age.

This is on eBay for £1800 with over 100k miles:

Don't scrap that car - it'll be valuable to somebody, particularly if it's in good condition.

Maybe ask on Honda forums and see if someone wants it? I'll bet you can get £2k without needlessly destroying it.

It sounds like the OP's Mum has a car that's worth saving and I hope he manages to keep it out of the scrappage scheme.

Thanks. I tried a search on Ebay for sold listings and found an identical car to hers with same mileage. It was advertised @ £1,595 - and the dealer took 'best offer accepted', which was the basis for my £1,500 valuation (I also looked at others, but the general trend points towards her car being somewhere around that value +/- £200).

I would like to hear from anyone who's used the scrappage scheme, as I don't think she is going to budge on selling. She doesn't want the aggro, simple as that.

NB - my understanding is that the 'up to £2,000' is for people who take cash alone, and don't take a travelcard. TFL offer a deal where you get more off the price than the equivalent travelcard would cost, i.e. they knock £500 off the scrap price (you get £1.5K for car), but you get a greater amount off travelcard. I am pretty sure that you get a flat-rate price for the car, as long as it has an MOT and is not ULEZ-compliant. I am asking here simply to get any helpful tips from anyone who's been through the process. There isn't much time left on the MOT, and although it should pass, there's no point in delaying if she wants shot of the car.

Seems a slight flaw in that system What's to stop somebody buying a £500 in Yorkshire, taking it down to London, and then taking advantage of the scrappage scheme? "Up to £2k" would make far more sense

Ummm, I just ran that car I linked to through the ULEZ checker and it came up as compliant...

...are you sure your mum's car isn't actually ULEZ compliant?

That's the utter stupidity of the ULEZ rules. Her car was made just before the Euro Emissions Class 4 came about, so although the limit of Nox is below the ULEZ standard, her car is classed as non-compliant. My 2000 Cliosport is the same. Were I to get an identical car in every way, but a year later on 2001 plate, it'd be compliant. Because my one came before the classification came in, it's non-compliant. Renault refused to issue me with a certificate to say it's compliant (they basically told me to eff off - were no help at all and have put me off ever buying a new Renault).

I hadn't thought of calling Honda... Maybe they will be cooler about the situation than Renault? My mechanic called VW and got a certificate... There is little impetus for the maker to do this. I get the impression VW did it for good PR. In theory, were a group of owners with cars that have fallen into the same trap got together and hired a lawyer, I suppose they could force the maker into issuing a certificate??... But that's not the point of this thread. The mother certainly hasn't got the appetite for that. I have for my Clio, but the 1st issue Cliosport is rare now and I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a very big group of litigants, or if it's legally possible.

I'm quite upset about it as I have a mate in Huddersfield with a collection of Ladas. We were planning to put them in my name in London...
