Was I interfering or right to phone the Police

Farmer putting down an oldish dog using a shotgun - common enough that I wouldn't think too much about it. Farmer putting down a young collie - that's not so common, if the collie had an injury that would stop it from working then yes, otherwise its quite strange and worth calling the police about.
