He certainly won't be get points and a ban for the same offence (unless he already has 6 or more points), though if he did end up with 6 points he'd also have his licence revoked under the New Drivers Act, which is distinct from a ban.

Too fast for a course but within the threshold for a £100 Fixed Penalty with 3 points. I suspect he’ll be getting 6 points and a ban, silly boy.
Ignore nonsense on the internet about Band A / B / C fines. That’s for court proceedings, which can be avoided by paying a Fixed Penalty.

Thank you, I had always assumed that a ban was effectively the same as getting 12 points. I understand now that this is not the case, and it makes a few prior stories I have heard make much more sense... Thank you again. Generally, I think the vast majority of youngsters I see who have recently passed their test seem to be very responsible / cautious drivers. Very different to how things were when I passed many years ago, so I think black boxes and the probationary period have probably contributed to a general improvement.
I'm shocked by the example from my OP. But there do seem to still be plenty of stories out there of youngsters making terrible mistakes and creating terrible consequences.
So I wonder if the standards of the youngest drivers really have improved, or if I've just been a bit blinkered.
