This has gone a bit quiet, how is everyone getting on? I've had a slow 24 hours, generally going down the rankings in the hunt for wind.
We're all in the same boat here, floating around with no wind and seeing others get away. In the last 24hrs I've dropped from 3600 to over 12,000. All I can say it is an endurance race not a sprint (baring in mind I am a guest within the pistonhead group , hubby an avid member "silverback mike"). My boat "nildesporandum" will be running aground going agaist the wind and generally partying my wat way around the course!

So Mike, what did you forget? I noticed one of your boats is headed back to Spain?

At 20kts as well, must have been something important!

My slow days were worth it to get to the wind; yesterday lunch time I was about 20,000th, now ~9000th smile

Whoa! Blast from the past. I'm back in, new boat name, JensensRevenge 1 added to the Wiki. Due to a late start I'm languishing in about 26,000 place at the minute. Wont be spending any money on extras so hoping that a complete lack of knowledge about sailing will make up for having the wrong equipment confused

I gave up in the end last time because I could only check my boat about once a day, but now we have the mobile app my interest should last.

Is the rhum line a Great Circle route or would it pay to 'cut the corner' of it do we think?

Well if nobody else is going to say it: what's the rum line, and what's a Great Circle route?

Thanks!

Seeing as we are navigating on a flat map, is it relevant?

Yep a straight line on a flat (mercatorial) map is a rhumb line

Most definitely. The map is flat but the real world is round. Join up two places on the round world in a straight line, looks like a curve when shown on the flat map. This is called a Great Circle route. The rhumb line is just the line from the start to the finish. If the curve shown on the page is a 'great circle' the shortest route would be to follow the curve.

Took my plan to check out the Moroccan coast a little too literally and managed to beach it! banghead
Back on track and the forecast looks pretty good down the coast, not looking quite so good out West with JoneseyII heading towards some fluky doldrums.
Fortunately for us, going west seems to have paid off smile

Indeed, (without wishing to sound too smug) it's all been fairly easy sailing out west, have pointed JoneseyII due south and have just broken into the top 1000 woohoo

Sadly the opposite has been the case with my No 1 boat slowly dropping backwards, looks like HMSMolevision and miksbrick are sneaking pass to the West as well, although at least the wind looks fairly steady all the way to the gate now

Indeed.. I only wish that I'd been more decisive like Hugh and gone a bit further west rather than faffing around trying to go south too soon. still up to 7000 and something from over 15000th 4-5 days ago...
