Can you recommend a decent lens for me being an amature! I just have my cannon 18-55 and 100-300 USM for longer distance. I would like a lens to practice on static things like pound coins and small stones to practice on.

Body is a 550D if that makes any difference! Keep up the good work guys, I love looking through this thread!
I've got a 550D myself and I'd highly recommend the Canon EF 100mm if you can push the bank to it. I personally have the EF-S 60mm however I find myself wanting the extra reach of the 100mm at times!

Another vote for the 100mm here - great lens for general use never mind macro smile

Yeah I second this. To demonstrate how close you can get, this shot below was taken with 550D, 100mm, Marumi ring flash (that I was holding to the left of the shot) and 3 extension tubes:

Don't make the mistake I did though! I bought a cheaper version of the Marumi ring flash initially to go with the 100mm and it wasn't fast enough for macro.

Nice shot nre, just being pedantic but isn't it a speckled bush cricket.

DD, great detail, they're scary up so close.

Here's one from me, a Banded Demoiselle Damselfly:

clap No idea how you took a macro without a flash. I'd need a tripod, a remote release, a dead subject and it to be the brightest day since records began hehe

I think this requires a photo - of the flash and diffuser set up at the very least!

Has anyone else noticed that a couple of tiddly tiny fat finger typos in the line above could turn it into "I think this requires a photo - of the flash and duff user set up at the very least!" No? Phew, thank goodness for that ...wink

Thanks Rob smile

The StoFen diffusers are about £20 iirc and the Fong domes were around £40 so not too bad (ignoring the fact that you need an MT24 to stick them on in the first place!)

I will stick a pic up later LQ - the domes look very like false breasts so it should raise a titter or two if nothing else smile

Ps - the duff user is not at all photogenic so I'll spare you that!

DD, I'm having trouble trying to envisage an MT 24 with Fong domes attached. I assume the domes cover the Stofens so having to imagine them as well is unnecessary? I await the pic with great anticipation.

As a slight aside ... I picked up a coupls of Lambency diffusers for my 580 EX flash. For some reason they are much cheaper than the Stofen variety. No doubt there is a good reason for that but it seems to work well enough. Anyone got any comments about comparative performance and quality?

Not quite in focus to get a decent crop. I still liked it so thought I'd share.

That's just a bra! I feel a bit self concious doing macro photography anywhere I can be seen with my kit, I don't know what I'd do with that unit!

Great shots btw ddarno.
