This topic was started in General Gassing. i have just started this to see what the local opinion is
the topic got me thinking about Seat's place in the VW group and the world as a whole. the conclusion i came to was there really is no need for them in the VW group.
if you want a budget reliable car or slightly performance budget car then Skoda will beat them on price and are the same on reliability.
if you are after something a bit nicer and more pricey then VW do better performance and with more of a name.
if you are after top of the line luxury and a decent name then Audi fits the bill
so aside from giving them the tiniest bit more market share, what value is SEAT to VW Group? surely it costs more in development and production than it would be worth?
i don't know, just up for the discussion/arguement/banter

I have a Seat Altea XL, Skoda do not have an equivalent type car and I wouldn't pay VW prices for a Golf+ even though its basically the same car.
I believe Seat, for obvious reasons, are huge sellers in Spain and there are certainly some countries which don't have much Skoda presence at all.
Suppose it could be argued that Skoda currently do not have a mid range hatch, you get the Fabia (which is Polo / Ibiza) territory but don't have an equivalent to the Leon (although I think one is soming soon).
Seat don't do an SUV type like the Yeti although , again, there is talk of one coming soon.
So agreed, between all the marques they have all bases covered but they are not necessarily repeating models between the marques?

I have been trying with a local dealer to put in a order with the local seat dealer with buying a new Leon cupra r and found the process a little annoying . First I went in and tried to put an order in and tried over and over again to try and offload their current stock on myself and I went off in a huff. Then today I phoned a little frustrated trying again to place an order and now they are telling me they stopped production two months ago in anything performance wise.

Just bought my first Skoda, traded in my Freelander for a Yeti Elegance 4x4 and its chalk and cheese, the Yeti is a revelation, quiet, comfortable, great build quality, amazingly flexible interior and good off road as well.

I always thought that SEAT was aimed at the younger age group , VW at the middle aged group ,and Skoda at the elderly. Not now. I'd suggest that Skoda are collecting customers from Seat, with products for all ages.

Peugeot went the same way a while ago, after the 106 gti I couldn't find a car I would buy. al Seat were on a roll with the Mk1 Leon, particularly the Cupra and Cupra R. They then lost the plot for at least 5 years with a string of munter MPVs (Altea, Alhambra) and the also ugly MPV-esque Leon Mk2. Meanwhile Skoda were getting most of the investment for interesting vehicles like the Yeti. Hopefully with the forethcoming Mk3 Leon Seat can get back to making something worthwhile.

The prime example was the Mk2 Toldeo, lovely saloon and they replaced it with a MPV. Realising their mistake they then release the Exeo which uses the old A4 tooling :-(
MK1 LCR was a cracker and took advantage when VW lost their way with the MK4 Golf GTI.

I bought a ibiza pd, when you consider its basically a polo and if you chip it, it produces 200 bhp. It had ap brakes too. And as some on here have seen it went not too bad.

al Couldn't agree more. He's sold us four cars and been brilliant. I own the Leon MK2 that seems to be hated by so many. But I like it.
