Resurrecting this post as maybe now there are more options to the OPs question.
So is there an engine that can straight replace without too much hassle the piece of ste that is the S2/S1 engine.
Here's a photo of my S2 before I sold it.
I’m restoring an s2 and have put a later (912) engine in , out to 2.5l , running around 240bhp . So is there an engine that can straight replace without too much hassle the piece of ste that is the S2/S1 engine.

The torque with that is around the limit for the gearbox (210lb ft ) .

I`m considering something similar with my car... who did the engine work for you? My car gearbox has an overdrive label on the gear knob, but no overdrive, so only 4 gears. Is this correct?? I guess it is possible to swap to a later 5 speed box??
Lotusbits . s1/2 gearbox is 5 speed

Spoken with Lotusbits thanks and it appears my car should have a 5th overdrive. Looks like a trip to them will be required at some point!
Your car has a 5 speed box. The overdrive label on the gearknob is just an old fashioned throwback. All road going Esprits from 1976 to 2003 left the factory with a five speed box. The overdrive labelling simply refers to the ratio of the gearing being used. Anything less than 1:1 would be considered an overdrive. (I think it's 0.76:1 in 5th on an S3)

If you've only got 4 of your 5 forward gears let's hope it's a shift linkage problem not a box problem. What happens if you try to change to 5th?
When I try to select 5th it simply feels like the movement is blocked... I spoke with Matt at Lotusbits yesterday and he thought the fact that I could select reverse absolutely fine indicated it was more likely to be a cable adjustment issue...but... ?? It had a new clutch last year and the gear selection is as before...pity they did not mention the lack of a 5th gear when the car was stripped down!
I`m prepared for the worst but I`m deliberating just how far to go with it all. I can happily potter about the lanes of Norfolk as the car is so do I keep the costs to a minimum (properly sort a cam cover oil leak and get the carbs serviced) or do I spend thousands getting everything sorted perfectly but in the knowledge that it would be an investment never to be recuperated??
