fatboy69 said: I love this aircraft & until RIAT last week I had never seen her fly!! She put on two awesome displays & I am so glad that i was finally able to see this magnificent creation in the air where she belongs.
What I find amazing is the love & respect for an aircraft on a scale that I don't think I have ever seen for any other aircraft - even the Red Arrows, good as they are, do not seem to have the kind of following that 558 has which is odd in many ways.
It's bizarre & I don't know why. Let's be honest - how many other aircraft are know simply by their registration number! I can't think of another one anywhere.
Off to the VTTS website now to see when her next displays are to see how man more times this year I can get to see her fly.
Hopefully I will be able to get to a display along with my 7 year old son who also now says he wants to see her fly!!! We used to be the best in the world (arguably) when it came to building jets in the 50's each airshow introduced faster, badder and madder aircraft. The Vulcan is seen as the crowning achievement of those years IMO

The Vulcan is seen as the crowning achievement of those years IMO That was definitely the British view of the British aircraft industry output in the 1950s. In reality, a lot of what was produced at that time (with some notable exceptions) were way behind what the US and even the French and Russians) were building. A lot of it was unwanted by the potential end users i.e the RAF, the Royal Navy and the airlines. Even the nationalised state airlines were often forced at metaphorical gunpoint to order British built aircraft.

By the time BA came along (1974) there weren't too many British built airliners available to buy.

It certainly does - although I had come to those conclusions a number of years ago when reading about how the British airframe manufacturers operated in the 1950s. It was pretty obvious that they way they went about things was hopelessly amateurish at times when it came to basic business nous. They may have been extremely talented engineers and inovative thinkers on occasion - but they didn't have a clue about how to promote, market or sell a product.
90% of the time they were building aircraft to official UK government requirements - and that went for civil designs as well as military. It was only when they had secured their UK government obligations that they MIGHT look around the rest of the world to see if anyone else might be interested in what they had built.

I think that we need more photo's of this wonderful aircraft.
What would also be good is photo's of 558 in service. Anyone out there got any shots of her?

Can't disagree - although the one-off all black Valiant B2 looked impressive. Pity it was never put into production -
