Initially I couldn't work out what on earth you were saying, then it dawned on me that you are asking if any of the dates in the films have any kind of significance to the real world if you, say, subtracted 100 years from them. Interesting fact: George Orwell published 1984 in 1949, so it's reasonable to assume he wrote at least part of it in 1948 and probably swapped the last 2 digits of 1948 to get 1984.

I also think Weyland knew more tha he let on, after all, the TED talk where he brings up Prometheus was set in 2023 and the events of the film in about 2093.
Again, it could just be sloppy scriptwriting rather than some intentional grander scheme. What was the TED talk? Did I fall asleep part way through?

Read most of this now. http://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/uswn1/prom...Seems mostly s t to me, but the film leaves so much open, who knows! I would think tying the Engineers to Jesus the Christ is risible, hope the sequel doesn't do that. The alien on the mural is a puzzler. http://www.newsarama.com/film/Prometheus-writers-t...Read most of that. "Spaihts: It's what pulled us away from prequel territory. Obviously, the great mystery of Alien is where did all of this come from and who was the big guy in the chair? That's where we're going to begin with Prometheus. But it's a fierce problem for a storyteller. Here's a 12-foot-tall, elephant-headed giant, so what are you going to do, write a movie about the elephant-headed giants? Who's going to watch that? Lindelof: I would watch that... Spaihts: [laughs] Well, certain die-hard nerds would watch it, but it's hard to make people care about human characters they can relate to directly, let alone investing in characters so strange." I would have watched it as well, so would a lot of non nerds, yet he states the bit in bold and yet what do they churn out, the biggest bunch of useless t ts we all love to hate with the most loveable one being an emotionless robot. Having said that I have thought a bit about the story, after just re watching the Ted talk. The Space Jockey's seeded the life on Earth? Or at least helped the biological change of rats/apes into apes/humans hence the DNA match. And we have been around for a loooooong time, so they were fine with that. According to conventional history things changed around 10,000bc, and we find evidence that at least one SP told the humans where they came from. In the Ted talk the story of Prometheus is told, who gives the humans fire and then is done in for it. Did one SP give humans the 'knowledge' (agriculture, language, how to make a dog sit) which then like setting fire to a blue touch paper exploded through the humans and created 'civilisation' which took all of our adorable big-eyed innocence away giving a possible reason for the SPs to 'start over' and get their toddlers (Eloi?) back??

WTF? So there's a whole load of stuff that's not in the movie but is background to it? Are you now supposed to research a film before going and seeing it?

Yep, that talk explains some nice background on David, and is even referenced in the film when David's watching Lawrence of Arabia. Why the hell wasn't in the film though? To me a film should be a standalone thing.

Right, here's my thoughts on the plot:
The engineers are striving to create a perfect species. They have a black goo that takes DNA and speeds up its evolution into something better - I don't think it is a weapon at all, more an advanced fertiliser. For instance, you see the maggoty things on the ground in the shrine room when they first go in, which the black goo then evolves into the snakey things. The film also starts with an engineer sacrificing himself with the black goo to eventually create humanity from the mix of his DNA and whatever biology that was already knocking about.
Humanity, however, needs another boost to improve it from a lull, or perhaps the engineers are unhappy with this particular version of their creation, so they want to go back to earth with their black goo and try again. 'To create something, first you have to destroy it.' David also suggests to Halloway that the engineers want to create a perfect species 'because they can.'
The alien in its form in the film 'Alien,' is the ultimate evolution of their experimentation so far - perhaps the shrine of the alien form is because on another planet elsewhere they have achieved it, or perhaps it is what they strive for from their experimentation with humanity. I assume this perfect creature experimentation is what then turned on the engineers and killed them.
As for the other bits and pieces, I think Weyland and David know that the black goo has regenerative powers, as it does, but not as they had hoped. They test it on Halloway to be sure. Shaw getting preggers is just an unfortunate side effect.
I assume the DNA 'match' was more of a general thing, DNA for two arms and two legs, but not going into detail about how long and muscly they are, for instance.
I reckon David asked the engineer about using the goo on humanity, which obviously the engineer would take offence to because it didn't work out particularly well from his point of view. He was probably then going to take off and nuke the planet from space, killing all the black goo and stopping them from taking it back to earth, just to be sure.
That's all for the mo!

Finally saw this at IMAX yesterday, was expecting it to be a lot better. It was like one of those movie execs that knows nothing about movies picked all the bits he likes from a script.
