how has it gone from iron man suit being the height of technology in marvel films to a flying aircraft carrier being the norm ????
Flying aircraft carrier is completely plausible in this comic book setting, their is probably ownly 1 in existance, being prototype/black tech presumably built by stark, presumably runs on an arc reactor, but doesnt use the more advanced repulsor technology stark has in his suit, it has giant props. And by aircraft carrier standards it wasnt that big.

The iron man suit is far more technologically advanced than the carrier. Just because its a big thing with a flat top doesnt mean its better than a fully articulated suit that can take heavy fire, the carrier was nearly taken down by a small explosion.

I think some of you are forgetting that these are based on comic books and if it's in the comic book, generally they'll try and do a job of emulating that in the movie. S.H.I.E.L.D. had a giant flying aircraft carrier in the comic books, hence they had one in the film too.
Yes....but you'd think the producers would say a) thats dumb and b) no one will miss it if we drop it.
No, I think the producers would probably say, lets get that in there as it's bloody awesome.
yes I think the producers would say this has a cult following, made up mostly of nerds & geeks - we HAVE to have this in, we can't change the characters too much, BlackWidow & Hawkeye are human, not superheros, so they use the human weapons that they have the best skills with.

rolleyes Seriously, if you don't like Marvel/DC/other Comic book characters - why bother going to see the films? rolleyes

This thread has run its course for me...
Come on Tim, don't leave the thread just because one poster doesn't appreciate/comphrehend comics wink

Oh alright then, but only because you asked so nicely... hehe

It just doesn't compute how someone could NOT absolutely love this film... biggrin

Why? I took my kids.

They loved it, the 5 year old has no idea how heavy an aircraft carrier is so he wasn't fussed. The 11 year old is too young for girls so he wasn't fussed about chunky thighs wink

Lol are you serious? Do some people miss whole sections of the movie? Shield has basically spent the last few years developing technology at a tremendous rate and no cost spared in order to try to counter the threat posed by aliens and gods from other planets hence the whole secret lab\Teseract facility at the beginning and the Stage II\shadow government conspiracy plotline.

This was all well explained througout the film and is in fact one of the major plotlines, it's how Agent Colson ends up with that big f*ck off ray gun amongst other things. Lol at some people's attention to detail, I guess the big shooty explosions are somewhat distracting. biggrin

Yes you could say it's all a bit far fetched but as another poster pointed out, so is a movie about people with superpowers.

Then why bother commenting here? Yes you have an opinion and every right to share it, but why bother for a film that you so obviously didn't 'get', let alone even want to see!

SJ is not chunky, not even if your wife IS Elle could SJ be called chunky! She is a UK size 10!

I remember taking my step-son to see a film once ages ago. God, it was so unrealistic! These toys came alive and had adventures on their own when their owner "Andy" wasn't around. It was so far-fetched, but I guess it was ok and he enjoyed it.

Then there was another film we saw with this big green ogre guy and a talking donkey. A talking donkey FFS! I mean, I can accept a big green ogre, but a talking donkey? It's so unrealistic.

Obviously the first thing I did when I got home was find a popular internet forum about the films and then had a good moan on them about how I didn't like the film. It made me feel nice and superior compared to those that did seem to like it.

Following that thought might as well forget about any adaptation then and just do original stuff.
There is a reason stuff gets adapted.

How is it the norm? It's SHIELDs 'secret' headquarters. A one off.

I love intermissions, wish they brought them back.

That makes no sense....are you suggesting that the only view people want to hear is "this XYZ is great"???? I watched the film, I thought it was ok, nothing special and 3D made it worse. Hardly a highly offensive opinion to hold!

I "get" the film.....I just didnt sit there rubbing myself throughout like some seem to have! I liked Iron Man, Thor was cool...wasn't keen on the Cap USA film...so thought I'd give this a go....and it was ok. You dont have to go far to far others who think the flying boat and the end that turned into Transformers 3 were not high points!

I realise I've upset a lot of people who have display shelves with their Star Wars toys on by not loving something based on their bestest cartoon ever.....but I dont care biggrin

Yeah, yeah....but there is some stuff that is best left in the comic! The only people who got excited when the boat started to fly were fan boys and 7 year olds wink

Now Batman does look good! (unless Alfred starts flying Wayne Manor around like that house in Up wink )

Doesn't the Batmobile go flying in the next Batman film? Pah! Stuff and nonsense.

I *do* think it is quite funny that of all the suspensions of disbelief required to sit through the Avengers, the helicarrier was the one that broke your particular camel's back.

hehe quite

It's ok for a man to quadruple his body weight from thin air, become virtually indestructible, and violate Newton's 3rd Law of Motion when a massive object crashes into him, but a helicarrier is right out. wink

No, I siad you had every right to your thoughts, just couldn't understand why you chose to air them the way you did wink

When you argue your point, your thoughts are far more indepth, and so understandable smile

I've yet to see it in 3D, seen it in 2D (with screaming kids!) and happily suspended all disbeliefs in order to enjoy it wink

I didn't enjoy Captain America either

I agree. I thought Captain America was a little weak - far too much stuff rushed through in montages that failed to create any sense of connection with the character(s). It just seemed like it was a prelude to Avengers. Same goes for Thor which, ironically, I actually enjoyed more despite not having any real prior knowledge of the character (which is also true of Captain America).
