Apology first...
Nice to see Mr Beer today
I have work to do, so can't watch. It's a bit like watching test match cricket - you don't know when the exciting bit will be and there are a lot of tactics involved from both sides. It takes a while to get into the subject, but it rewards you when do.Nice to see Mr Beer today

I have sat in board meetings where the Chair and CEO have instructed other directors that we should, and I quote "shaft our partners to maximise our return"
I said that I found this unpalatable, and thought it was wrong morally. A week later I was looking for a new job, apparently I hadn't met my targets - wrong, and my face didn't fit - weird after 6 years and growing the business 400%!
They had to pay me off though - 1 years salary, car for a year, pension for a year! I got a new role in a week, paid off the mortgage.
You work in housing IIRC? I had a very unhappy few months in a senior role at a large housing association. The culture and behaviour from the rest of the exec and some of the board was pretty dreadful. I pulled the pin after 6 months, landed a job a few weeks before I left. Sadly no exit with a cheque, but 100% agree that principles and doing the right thing are the most important thing. I said that I found this unpalatable, and thought it was wrong morally. I am in housing and investment.2 x housing association boards
1 x private equity investment board
(apologies for being a ph stereotype)
Previously I was on the board of housebuilders. They are all changing significantly, the biggest change being in housebuilders who are finally dragging themselves out of the Neanderthal approach! Housing associations have also seen dramatic change with incoming exec directors and a shift of focus towards the customer.
Investment is a bit different - its fair to say that the focus is laser and aimed at one thing - ££££'s Shaping the culture is more challenging....... but social impact investment is starting to shift that.
To be honest, we need more diverse boards across all of the sectors I work in, younger folks in their 30's are starting to have an impact, but they are few and far between on boards (for obvious reasons of experience etc). There are now many more women on boards and much more ethinic diversity and thats good because it drives a better culture.
