Not really - there are plenty here who have no problem with people earning a lot of money or trying to minimise their tax liability, but who just don't like to see hypocrisy.

First cast is stone the let without he who sin

Or something like that ;-)

It's certainly not a big enough boo boo to warrant all this media and political attention, that's for sure.

On the subject of which, Cameron has been going on this evening about people operating "anti avoidance schemes". Presumably in an attempt to pay more tax.

Well, the jokes are doing the rounds on Facebook and also the PH joke thread already...

"Jimmy Carr has revealed that his comedy business generates three million pounds a year, which after tax is roughly three million pounds."

? I am chilled. If you could see the missing pages you would see that I don't take any of this seriously.
Can you see the other pages or is it just me and Halb that can't?
Technical question. No drama.
Halb can see all the posts, he has his settings set to show more posts per page, the default setting has it currently at 30 pages, nothing has been deleted.

Log out, clear your cookies and log back in again and it should fix it, else go and post in website feedback that you can't see some posts, but please hold back on the "mr big nasty man took them away from me" otherwise you wont be here long.

The "morality" of tax is a peculiar Anglo-Saxon thing. The rest of Europe doesnt share it at all. You simply try to avoid it as much as possible. There is no shame involved, no pariah status, it is a simple and given expectation that every person will do their utmost to pay as little tax as possible.

Except in low tax countries. The opposite system operates there because it is inherently to the individuals favour if they do their tax properly, using the system properly because it is designed to protect the citizen.

Britain has the worst of all worlds.

Greece is a great example of this...

The Mail has coverage of fallout from the PM getting stung on the ass by his own bum remarks.

Article said:
David Cameron was in full retreat over his condemnation of celebrity tax avoiders last night, following warnings that his attack on Jimmy Carr could open a Pandora’s Box.

Mr Cameron’s backtracking came after warnings his decision to brand Carr’s behaviour ‘morally wrong’ could lead to a repeat of John Major’s infamous ‘back to basics’ campaign, which backfired when it drew attention to the morals of senior Tories. Downing Street was yesterday struggling to answer questions about precisely what constituted ‘morally wrong’ behaviour.
Angela Eagle has suggested Barlow has escaped criticism because he is a Tory supporter.

A spokesman was asked whether the description applied to middle-class parents who gift money to their children to avoid inheritance tax. They also had to field questions about the tax arrangements of the Prime Minister’s late father.

CMD is always at his most inept when kissing up to Guardian readers, albeit a minor step up from his usual level of ineptitude.

As a comedian, I can take him or leave him. He can be amusing as a panel show guest. I don't go out of my way to watch him on TV.
You're a comedian Eric? I didn't know that........ wink
I'm hilarious - only nobody realises it.

That system works well in Greece (and Spain and Italy and even Ireland).

Avoidance? A problem for Greece & Co has been basic evasion.

Avoiding tax is allowed, the authorities set the rules.

If the loophole is there then use it. Why not? Simply close it if it's so bad. Why hasn't it been closed earlier - any MPs use it perhaps?

He didn't come across as being particularly bright - I have to say.

He kept going on about "everybody should pay the same tax" but didn't seem to be able to explain what he meant by that. In one breath he stated that everybody should pay the same percentage of tax and then he seemed to be saying that everyone should pay thr same fixed tax amount every year - irrespective of their personal level of income.

I think Portillo and Johnson went easy on him so as not to embarrass him.

Even sharper than not paying much tax is being given other people's tax on the basis of a myth. Ask CMD's FiL about a neat £300k/year, small beans to a multimillionaire land owner but not to Joe Public shelling out the tax.

We all know that.

The problem is when the legality of an "avoidance" scheme is not clear.

I find it quite amusing that people are expecting a comedian that makes jokes about the disabled to suddenly become a pillar of morality.

It all smacks of jealousy at the realisation that he earns so much, thinly veiled by a mild disgust of a hypocrital joke (that's joke, not party political broadcast!).
I hate paying tax. I've sought to minimise my tax position over the years. Fair do's I reckon. In some ways I'm encouraged to do so with ISA's and the like.

And then there's aggressive tax avoidance..... Members of K2 and other schemes know that it's dodgy. Being paid in loans from offshore funds is something you sign up to knowing that it's somehow not quite legit, that you'll 'get away with it' because it's a loophole.

I'm not jealous in the slightest, but I'm watching with amusement as these carefully hidden plans unravel.

The "business woman of the year" on Question Time also couldn't quite get her head around this. In one sentence she uttered that she wished that she could only pay 1% and then said that we should curtail tax avoidance schemes, but also admitted she utilises tax breaks and benefit schemes.

It's almost a natural human reaction not to want to pay tax. I don't begrudge anyone wishing to try and maximise their income for their own benefit.
