Looking to get some carpet for the stairs going up to the landing and for the three bedrooms but there seems to be a void of advice on who's good to go to.

Carpet right on every high street but Internet full of woes, john Lewis good stories but expensive, local guys seem pleasant but expensive.

Also tired of hearing how much underlay cost when I know it can be bought for a fraction at http://www.tradepriced.co.uk/

I was thinking of either thus as everyone recommends it albeit for £8 a meter.

As said, local independent. Good service and shouldn't try to rip you off. If it's a small room they're more likely to even show you remnants which may suit your taste.

I use the 11mm Dreamwalk. Great stuff. Get comments all the time about how 'bouncy' my carpets are.

Do you need different underlay for stairs and hall?

Are there any good online suppliers of carpet so that I could say go and see say a "dubromnay wool weave 2 in classic stone brown" see I like it and then buy it online direct to have it delivered and then fitted by a local guy?

Is wool the best material or not?

It's for stairs upto landing and then three bedrooms..

If you're in Herts, Beds or Bucks I should be able to point you in the direction of my mate that helped me out

HI, don't go for 100% wool if you want it to wear, the reason poly polyprop is added to a wool carpet is to make it wear, rubber underlay is gone and the new foam underlay is the way forward.
For a decent stain free carpet ( man made but don't dismiss it as some of the new man made fibres are better than the wool equivalent, just don't buy a felt backed carpet) you should be looking at between £10 and £20 a yard.
For a good 80/20 wool carpet from £15 - £25 a yard
for the best quality cloud 9 underlay 11mm about £4 ish a yard ( cosi walk 10mm is cheaper but nearly as good)
and for fitting £2.50 a yard and £3.00 a yard for hall, stairs, landings and vinyl.
If buying off the fitter grippers and doorplates should be free as they cost us peanuts.

We are made up with it - the 100% man made carpet is a revelation. Would thoroughly recommend it.

I've just had carpet fitted on my hallways, stairs and landing by Seriously Crap Shysters and can say that, bar the independent fitters, they've been absolutely bloody shocking throughout.

Everything from:
Promising to come out to measure up next day, then forgetting
Measuring up so badly that they added 8sqm to the actual measurement (everyone else measured it as 31sqm, so how they managed it I don't know)
Booking me into a fitting three weeks in advance, then calling a week beforehand to remind me that I've not booked with them yet
Sending the fitters round on a rainy day with uncut carpet and no cutting plan

Thankfully the indie fitters took a bit more pride in their work, and refused to fit without the cutting plan due to the 5m width of carpet. Came back a few days later and did a fabulous job, no thanks to the useless store staff.

Anyway...

I sourced my underlay from tradepriced, and picked up two of their 15sqm rolls of tredaire dreamwalk 11mm. It's absolutely fantastic stuff, and has really made the difference on the cheap carpet. If anything, on 31sqm of carpet I've still got the best part of 4sqm left of the roll as the underlay doesn't go all the way to the edges.

Get your grippers, metals and underlay online and check your fitters are happy to fit it. No way was I going to be paying 8.99 a sqm from the chains or the independent shops.

although 11mm thick not very compact ..... as long as you're happy! i could sell you the same for £15 a roll, it's miles apart from the cloud 9 11mm which costs us £38 + vat

I'm selling the same carpet for £9.50 a yard... wondering am I cheaper or more expensive ?

Thats a polypropylene twist, 11mm cloud thingy underlay with, and I quote "a high tog rating that will keep the noise down", and fitting. Our duvet is 12 tog and I can still hear her break wind from the other side of the bed. Tog is a measure of insulation you clown.
The belgian carpet itself was 60% off sunday until wednesday. Yeah right.
60% off the Greek national debt as far as I can tell.
Independent carpet shop - Carpetworldnw in Oldham - £less than half.
This time with 12mm foam underlay, BRITISH-MADE (woohoo - we still make something!) poly twist carpet that feels a slightly better quality anyway, measuring, fitting and all the grippers and 12 threshhold trims.
Carpetright are just ridiculous. Avoid. But you knew that anyway.
