Looking at driving down from the midlands getting on the Chunnel and heading for the French coast maybe renting a bite for a week , problem is don't know where to go. I've ski'd in France many times visited Paris and done the Le Mans thing for the last 10 years but I've never done a family holiday. I suppose the further south I go the better the weather but I'm really after a bit of advice as to where might be the best place for our first visit. I haven't spoken French since I left school which is quite a while a go so I need to go somewhere, where the locals have seen lost tourists before. Any tips gratefully received.
Thanks
Steve

Far too many choices!
Have a look at the various regions like Normandy, Britanny which are reasonable to drive to. If you want to drive a lot further I simply love Provence..

We regularly go to Villefranche sur Mer between Nice & Monaco. Great weather, plenty to visit. We take a road trip to get there (stop off at Lyon maybe), and break the journey at Rheims on the way back. (Sometimes to really break the journey we sometimes go via Italian lakes )

Done this for years.
My choice has always been Atlantic coast as I first went there for the surf (too fat and old now). Still like the laid back feel of surf resorts though. So I go to the likes of Lacanau, Hossegor etc. The weather down there has been reliably warm first 2 weeks of Sept, less so early Summer.

It depends, to some extent, what it is you want to do.... With kids? Just two of you?
The northern coast is very French (of course) but the weather is very similar to the UK. As you say, heading South makes a the weather certain - but it's a 9 hour drive from Calais. I've done it many many times!
I prefer the Eastern side and the south eastern coast.
The French have had a massive sense of humour failure about speeding. Bear that in mind!

Would be with my other half and daughter who's 16 and she'd possibly take a friend so semi adult if you know what I mean. Would like a better chance with the weather so probably long haul by car!. Having done the Le Mans run many years I appreciate what you mean about Le Gendarmes.

We've been t Brittany for the last two years. Easy to get to from the tunnel but the weatjers a bit iffy.
We're pff pn 2nd July down to Dordogne for a couple of weeks renting a gite just outside Bergerac.

The Vendee (just south of Brittany) is far enough to get you decent weather in the summer. However, you've left it pretty late to get somewhere on the coast if you're thinking of this July and August so I would get your skates on if I were you. Besides the usual small gite/villa on its own, you can get a holiday flat in a Mark Warner-y type place such as with this lot, where the teenagers can go off and do their own thing if required: http://www.pv-holidays.com/gb-en
