Half the time in my company it's a short message in the subject line if it comes over on email. Google chat gets used a bit for official stuff, Skype for unofficial stuff

I always use Hi, although I've started addressing my boss as D.

Hi doesn't work so well when it's lets say a challenging email over costs etc which is very likely to get the receivers back up because no doubt they won't be repling starting with a Hi.

On an semi-related note, has anyone else noticed that smileys suddenly appeared to become acceptable in external emails about six months ago?

From nowhere I started getting emails with them in from clients; it's almost like someone flicked a switch and made it so.
Yes! I always assume the sender is being friendly, maybe over-friendly, but it's a worry when the sender is a bloke...

Guilty! There should be a spell check clever enough to spot that one, and other 'words' where keys are close which mean very different things.

There is, it lives behind your eyes. Spell checking is pretty much just that, I don't think there are any that check if a correctly spelled, but contextually incorrectly used word is employed. Anyway, who doesn't love a malapropism here and there?

Yeah, fair enough. I just don't always read everything before it's sent.
