Teaching kids religion is abusive. Faith schools are abusive in that sense, yeah.
But in practice what actually goes on at a normal c of e type faith school is basically the same as what would happen at a normal school.
Some of the other religions worry me though. In general the c of e faith schools are accidents of history no one takes seriously. Stuff like muslim or jewish faith schools, the religion is usually taken seriously and this is a horrific thing.

No. There have been various religion based threads forever, my hope is that religion will be looked back on as an unfortunate episode in our past. ...as such I cannot help but view the deliberate inoculation of children's vulnerable minds with patent nonsense as anything other than entirely malign.

I find it very sad that the many outspoken atheists on PH are more than happy to poke fun at, ridicule and even abuse those that admit to being religious. These tend to be the same people that reguarly make the claim that the religious are mentally deficient in some way or just plain nutty.
I can only conclude that PH is happy for mental people to be made fun of and we should organise a PH meet to a special school so we can point and laugh at the mental kids.
Having just read that back to myself I see how stupid it sounds, but it is to near the truth to change and begs the question that if you really believe the religious are nutty mental types why is it ok to make fun of them?
I would also like to know what the OP was told when he reported this abuse to the authorities as If I thought children were being abused I would report it without a second thought. Or is he happy to witness abuse and do nothing?

The OP may well not be religious but what i dont think he understands is that children can and often do choose what they do and do not like. They can make up their own minds and draw their own conclusions on something such as religion. If they choose to follow it then good for them, it obviously makes them happier. Dont see the need to think any less of them for it.

I don't think you can call religious faith schools 'abuse', maybe one-sided and too segregating in a western country, and I agree that religion of any kind, unless it's purely from a historical or sociology point of view hasn't any place in an education system in the UK. However, these changes aren't likely to happen soon.

No. The fluffy CofE and the like give dangerous credence to all sorts of ignorant peasant superstition. Telling defenceless children that delusional/supernatural nonsense is anything other than delusional/supernatural nonsense is abusive. We are where we are due to rational and sceptical enquiry, we should not give quarter to ignorant peasant superstition.

In alot of faith schools they teach about many other religions too (islam judaism etc), not just the one. The children can make up their own minds on what to believe. They aren't given lines for not believing something or going to church everynight.

My religion tells us "thou shall not kill" not thou shall not kill unless tony blair says it's ok, it is only those without faith, those that reject it that are prepared to kill.
