Also pub bound. Loving these, ignore the dad jeans! Also shows what I was on about re lacing

Good lord, that’s a horrible job of lacing. At the very least they need untwisting cry

From a previous conversation on here, a well laced adidas..

And a huarache, laces out..

Yes. Though I've actually not worn my 'challenging' colourway ones out since I bought them last year!

Had some white / green / yellow versions in the early 90s. Didn’t think they were still available.
Super comfortable.

Definitely size up half a size, or even a whole size. I’m generally a 10, those are 10’s and tight. I have 11’s that don’t feel loose.

There's also Napoli, which has a virtually identical upper to the Milano with the addition of D-rings. From what I've seen online, Napoli was a 1983 style (no source for this as it's from a picture in an eBay listing, unfortunately). If we take Milano as late-1970s and All Black as circa 1981, I expect that the company was getting its money's worth. If Milano was the first style to use that upper, it makes sense that later shoes became more advanced. Napoli has a different sole pattern, for one.

Guam is interesting because it was originally a Japanese exclusive release. It shares the same sole unit as the Milano, and I can find no definite release date other than '1980s'. The size? blog about the AS 240 indicates that the AS 500 was a nod to the Milano, but looking closely there's additional stitching around the collar of the shoe which might point to it being a slightly different upper.

The AS 520, as a SPZL homage to the AS 500, might be slightly different again. I actually dug back through Gary Aspden's Instagram posts and found discussion about the toe guard. According to his Instagram, the toe guard isn't as tall as on the Samoa. However, the AS 520 does have the same outsole as the Samoa.

I've never held a Guam to be certain, but I assumed (perhaps wrongly) that it had the Milano sole unit. If the blue midsole is foam and not solid rubber, it all sounds like another advancement applied to an upper which had been in use for a few years by the time of Guam's release. All of this has made me want to know more about the Samoa, because it absolutely does look to have an EVA foam midsole but I know very little about its history. I've never owned a pair. Meanwhile, the AS 520 SPZL uses the same sole as the Samoa, but has a channel cut out of the midsole that the Samoa doesn't, leaving me wondering if that's an AS 500 era touch connecting the design back to the same channel on the Milano's solid feeling rubber.

All of this is complicated by the fact that the hardcore collectors who have catalogue collections don't really digitise them or make them an open source. I can see why from a value standpoint, but it makes trying to pin down details on 40-50 year old trainers only slightly harder. smile
Have you been to any of the spzl exhibitions? You'd love them!

Like you I like all the little differences and intricacies! The different production centres around the world at varying times seems to be the biggest factor in different styles! Now most of the generic stuff is made in 1 or 2 places!

What's your collection like? What are your favourite styles/models?

I don’t find the handballs to be as comfortable as the samba. But I was in uk the other week and now understand what the summer of samba was all about. Seemed every other person had white with black striped sambas, even couple wearing matching shoes.
Yes, it’s really annoying. I’ve been wearing Sambas (and Gazelles) for about 25 years. Got myself (the now ubiquitous) white and black striped ones with a dark sole last summer. Finally I’m on trend, but now look tragically like a middle aged bloke trying to look like the kids, when the reality is they are just catching up with what I’ve been trying to tell them all along…

Unfortunately, my collection is really nothing special, and I've definitely slowed my buying pace further in the past few years. Weekdays mean steel toecaps (Grisport Chukkas currently), so it really comes down to the weekends and I often find I wear the one pair those two days. This weekend I've been wearing Campus '80s. I like them. The '80s model was a really nice release; it comes in a lift-top box which looks very retro with two pairs of laces and is, most surprisingly of all, leather lined. I admit I don't know if it's real leather, but I said before that the Puma Suede feels far more premium for having such a lining, and it works the same here. Feels like theft knowing I bought them from End for £36.

I must take stock of my collection at some point to give you a more definite answer. As far as favourites go, the Milano remains my all-time favourite. Of those, my favourite release was the petrol green/blue and silver size? exclusive one from, I think, 2013. For an infinitely wearable staple the Stan Smith must get a mention, but I've only owned a single pair of those and I don't ever remember being blown away by the comfort. I am also partial to a Gazelle, but thus far I haven't really bought the same style in multiple colours (Milano and Samba Super notwithstanding). I would've had a burgundy pair of Gazelles if the Campus '80s hadn't cropped up at just the right time and at less than half the price.

Being in Northern Ireland, the SPZL exhibitions have always been out of my way. They're not a million miles away and a cheap flight would probably put me right into the cities they're being held in, but I've just never been. Have you? It looks like there's quite a communal element to the exhibitions because everyone is there for much the same reason. Although I understand the most recent launch had 'influencers' rushed to the front of the queue rather than the familiar faces. For a semi-amusing fact, the only SPZL release I've ever bought were the Samba in the Trainspotting colours (black and slime). I never once wore them. One SPZL release I do regret missing out on was the Warszawa. I don't remember ever loving the colours but I thought the design of the upper was really quite nice.

I’m surprised that you can wear both campus and gazelle. Campus, superstars, Stan’s etc just don’t feel right on my feet. Too wide and they flex at a point that I can feel with every step.

Can anyone recommend a site that I can easily sell a pair of "Nike" trainers. (Won't say size or model as I don't want to contravene the ad rules here. But they are a popular ish model) eBay is sadly too risky these days.

Bought them in 2017, (still have the email receipt from Foot Locker, so they are genuine) wore them once for about 15 mins. Didn't like them. (rubbed my ankle bone) Put them back in the box and put them in a cupboard where they stayed! I'm not likely to wear them now I don't think

Seems a waste to just chuck them to a charity store. They were £140 back then, StockX has the same shoe listed at £270 now. (Listed is not sold of course!) But I've never used StockX before and not sure if its worth the hassle to register and jump through all their hoops just to get £60 or whatever

Suggestions?

I'd recommend Vinted if you're not on Facebook specific buying and selling groups. My missus has sold about 40 pairs of trainers on there with absolutely no hassle and loads of clothes as well.

Why is ebay too risky?

You can't sell them on StockX if you've worn them - unless they would pass as deadstock condition. GOAT is another option if you're trying to sell used.

There are also Facebook groups to buy / sell shoes.

I'd agree with this. I went half a size but really should have gone a whole size.
