Fencing. No, not erecting wooden boundaries or dealing stolen goods, but learning rapier and dagger like a musketeer.
We use treatieses written in the late 1500s/early 1600s by fencing masters and try to perfect those techniques. These are a few clubs around and you can do medieval long sword or 19th century sabre and more. They all fall under the banner of HEMA - Historical European Martial Arts.

90% of all the sword fighting you've seen in movies is bobbins.

Clay pigeon shooting, rifle shooting and other seasonally available fieldsports. Absolutely obsessed with it. I could probably talk a glass eye to sleep on shooting and still keep going.

I'd advise anyone to try clay pigeon shooting. For something as simple as shooting a clay disc out of the air its very fun and addictive.

Also the gym but that's more a requirement to stop my body turning into a huge and immobile lump of fat, skin and hair. Maintaining your health is kinda like a learned skill, if you don't use it, you'll lose it and I intend to keep it for as long as possible. I see at lot of 45+ year olds who are completely fked through ill treatment of their bodies with diet, alcohol and smoking. I'm going to try my best to ensure that isn't me.

Previously and now very occasionally mountain biking, cars and sea/ carp fishing.

Sadly lost interest in fast cars but I do have a hankering for a used V8 range rover.

I believe you may have just defined golf for amateurs.

Aviation - I’m still in the RAF 27 years after joining up.

Clay pigeon shooting, love it so much but my god it’s an expensive hobby only getting more and more expensive.

Ice Hockey, season ticket holder for Nottingham panthers. ‘Let’s go Panthers’

Food, wife and I enjoy trying Michelin star restaurants or highly rated places. I’m also quite fond of street foods so do a few of them.

Motorsport, any form of it really.

No longer interested in.

Sailing, both dinghy and small yacht. Last time I sailed was a RS200 about 5 years ago. I’m 48 now and messing about on small dinghies is done for me. I’m not flexible enough. I hate the cold. I have no interest in racing. (Although I have toyed with the ide of a wander/wayfarer and doing dinghy cruising. Yacht sailing I did via the RAF, far to expensive for me as a hobby.

If your in to clay pigeon shooting, I’ve seen a few say so. This is a good thread discussing clay pigeon shooting.

Had many hobbies but these have stuck with me

Playing music - keys and guitar. Whilst not gigging, I like to record some of my own stuff at home, and I like to deconstruct classic songs to try and play all the parts without reading the music (I can, but actively seem to avoid reading it unless necessary)

Cycling/mountain biking - since a kid of 6 or 7 back in the late 80s I've always had bikes in my life. They took a back seat between about 17 and 25 due to cars but they're a solid part of what I do now.

Gym - been at it for 18 months now and I wish I'd done it sooner. Lifting weights suits my thing for repetition. It's also releases endorphins and can be enjoyed in any weather

Gardening-love a well kept garden in summer. Wife has since lockdown, taken the reins on this but I'm still in charge of the lawns.

Great thread, plenty of new ideas (to me) to think about.

Mine are:

Hockey - umpiring not playing.
Travel - Africa mainly, and I am back out there in a month to Zambia for an international series.
Programming - my career, which is fortunate.

Used to sail in my teens (am now 60), and I keep thinking about restarting. My daughter is also interested, but she is off to the USA in Aug for university.

Cycling (MTB and gravel), kayaking (mostly sea) and climbing. And tinkering in my shed, depending on what YouTube rabbit hole has inspired me.

A few on here have mentioned clay pigeon shooting. Interested I checked prices for an experience at a local range. £90 for half an hour. Punchy. How much would it be if you have your own gun and don’t need someone with you?

If I were shooting clay pigeons I’d like to shoot some real ones too, but not sure how you go about getting invited in shoots.

Mountain biking - Riding as well as building/fixing/tweaking and upgrading them. Ridden since the age of about 13 and other than a few years off mid/late twenties it's always been a passion.

Modifying cars - Of the 15 cars I've owned over the years only 4 haven't been modded in some way and I like to do as much work as I can myself. Used to do a lot of VW festivals but I'm taking a rest from that but i'll get back into them at some point I bet.

Music - Not a musician but my dad is and so I've grown up with music. Whenever I'm not watching TV or a film there's generally always music instead, whatever I'm doing, I even ride my bike with an earbud in. I'm always on the hunt for new music too and can spend hours on Spotify discovering new artists.

-making videos (for my business but also vintage cars)
-cars (I enjoy going to places where I can see and hear interesting cars; is this a hobby?)
-fitness (weights etc)
-martial arts
-computer games (although now that I'm doing a lot of videos for YT and TT, I feel like I'm playing some kind of Sim game so haven't actually played a proper game in a good few months as video creation seems to tick a certain box - create a video, upload it, check the performance/score (ie views/subs))
-tennis...

Tennis is another big hobby. I’ve played for most of my life, on and off. I am not very good given how long I have been playing.
biggrin

I don't think it's the length of time that really counts so much as the frequency. If you play 3-4 times a week, you'll notice a dramatic improvement. I'm in the same boat, if I play once a fortnight, my timing is off and I make more mistakes. When I have time (or can be arsed) and increase it to 3 times a week, I just hit the ball better! As it is, I've other things to do so I just accept that mistakes are going to be made a lot.

No. We meet every two weeks. It's very informal and of low quality.

Basically, rather than a game of skill, control and nerve, our version is just yet another way to spread malicious village gossip.
