Five times.

Came across a car on its roof and the 2 x drunk occupants bleeding, sitting on the verge. I was about 7 at the time and had to run to the nearest phone box.

Came across a car on its roof, nobody in car but the wheels were still spinning. Main issue was there was a child seat inside... car was in a field and it was dark. Petrified in case I stumbled across an ejected passenger. Police came and got a statement later - there had been no kid in the car and the driver was tracked down at his home address. Drunk.

Saw a rather unsteady bloke get into a car in the distance and drive off. (See below for update)

Was following a driver who I suspected of being drunk (swerving all over the place etc) - Police were en route but the car stopped (at a pub) so not sure if anything happened after that. Got told in this call that the previous chap I'd shopped was stopped and found to be over 4 times the limit.

Mum collapsed / had a seizure - Ambulance fortunately was only a few minutes in arriving. Felt like forever though.

All I'm getting from your post is I shouldn't set foot in a conference centre. Especially if you're running it :-)

Once.

Guys in balaclavas on my drive cutting the cat off my car and waving around what looked like a sword when I confronted them.

I was still on hold when they cleared off so just hung up.

My son called 999 twice when he was about 18 months. Police turned up at the house both times as obviously there was just silence on the call. We put the phone out of reach after the second time obvs.

Twice for me.

First time was to report a driver I suspected was drunk as he was bouncing all over the road and was heading towards the motorway.

Second time was when my wife collapsed due to blood loss following a procedure at hospital. Someone was on the way as she was unconscious but as she started to come back around they suggested I’d dropped down the priority list and to take her the hospital myself if possible. 2 hours later she was in theatre having emergency surgery!

I've dialled 999 at least 100 times. Worked on the doors for 15+ years plus another security gig for 9 years. Dozens of scraps where it's gone OTT, drug-induced incidents where people have taken too much, genuine fire alarms in night clubs (and to think I once worked a pub that would place a chain and padlock on the fire escape to stop casuals getting out and fighting opposition fans), the list really could go on and on... most recent was concerning an attempted suicide, we caught the young lad trying his belt on for size near some railings of height.

Glad to see a lot of frequent callers for drunk driving. Dialled in a lot of those over the years. The attitude of some people when you confront them about it is shocking, they simply don't care.

Just remembered this drunk driving incident actually, just after lunchtime as well... I grabbed the keys.

5 times in 20odd years

1: girlfriend was on the phone to me whilst walking home. Screams, line went dead, uncontactable. A police car was on the scene within minutes, took her home and called me from her living room (she’d been mugged but not harmed). Absolutely top response on this one, couldn’t have asked for more.

2: city centre, guy on the ground with 2 guys holding him down and another belting the st out of him. Blood everywhere. Got out of sight and called 999, they were aware but didn’t seem bothered in the slightest.

3&4: burglaries

5: only time I’ve ever needed to call an ambulance. Dad fell down the stairs and hit his head very badly (fractured his skull). 3am rural location, ambulance crew were brilliant. Having your dad tell you he loves you and thinking he’s going to die, not so brilliant.

1; A friend of mine was trapped upside down in a car that was on fire, (a Montego Estate). I phoned 999 for the Fire Brigade and an Ambulance as no matter what we tried, we couldn’t get him out of the car. By the time the Fire Brigade had turned up, our friend was no more.

2; When I was working in London an Isuzu Piaza was being stripped for parts in Russel Square by a few blokes who were quickly loading the parts into the back of a Ford Transit. Upon phoning the Police, I was asked by the guy on the other end of the phone “what do you expect me to do about it?”

3; When I was running a very rough pub in a very rough area I had four guys trying to kick my doors down in the early hours of the morning. When I phoned the Police, all they could offer me was a crime reference number for any potential criminal damage.

4; I saw four lads in ski masks, on two stolen motorbikes wielding machetes through a park on a Sunday summers afternoon.
Assuming that they weren’t out there to help old ladies cross the road, I phoned the Police. I was asked if these aspiring footballers were committing a crime right this second and replying that I didn’t know as they had now gone out of my view, the call handler put the phone down on me.

I wouldn’t even waste my time phoning 999 any more, especially for any crime that was being committed.

Many times, used to live in a rural area so you end up dealing with lots of things, big ones were:

1) PAN AM 747 crashed miles away but the next morning found lots of stuff, not nice.
2) Watched a Tornado IDS fighter-bomber crash in the trees behind our house, crew did not eject but there was nothing you could do.
3) Behind a car that head on with another on a wet bend, gave 1st aid until the ambulance arrived, all survived.
4) Behind a drunk driver that head on with a parked car, hung onto him until the police arrived and arrested him.
5) Instructor crashed his paramotor one evening after a day teaching us, air ambulance came but unfortunately he did not survive.

Loads of times:

(1) Old boy broken down on hard shoulder waving his phone at traffic. It was only when I drove past that I realised he was disabled and couldn't walk to the emergency phone. Remembered the mile post number just past him. Called Kent Police, rather than 999, and asked to be put through to their motorway division at Coldharbour.

(2) Many Road Traffic Accidents - motorbike fails to give way and crashes into the side of a campervan; accident at a junction involving 2 fully loaded MPVs where people were screaming about an imminent explosion. The engine/ignition was still on and pumping coolant onto the exhaust, so I simply walked up to the car and turned it off. biggrin

(3) Walking with The Vikingettes in the Lake District and encountered a lady having breathing difficulties. Checked her out and established that it may be a minor heart attack. Called 999 and asked for Ambulance, but would probably need Mountain Rescue to get her down. Moved her to a slightly more shaded spot and got The Vikingettes to hold my rain jacket (for over 90 minutes) to keep the sun off her.

Just once when a neighbour collapsed while walking past our house. My wife administered CPR (she was a trained first aider). The ambulance arrived very quickly but sadly were unable to save him.

Just remembered another one:

My brother and I met up after work for a bit of RC slope soaring from a cliff top.
We walked back to the car park, and were watching a couple of guys paragliding out over the sea.

One of them was struggling to land, came in really fast right between our cars. Must've been doing 50 or 60 mph when he hit the ground, getting dragged a fair distance across the gravel car park. Looked nasty.

No phone signal, so I ran up the hill to the top of the lane to call 999, and then rang the car park operator to try and get the height barrier opened to allow the ambulance through, to no avail. Crew had to leave the vehicle and walk down.

Meanwhile, the other flier landed safely, and helped my brother comfort the injured guy.

Seen a couple of Paraglider pilots die over the years, I was one, so unsurprising I was about when things went wrong.

Only called the cops once, coming home from the pub, I clocked a couple of guys wandering around undergrowth outside my neighbour's house, thought they had to be burglars, I hung around to guide the police to the spot & they turned up mob handed in a van, assumed I was the bad guy & drove straight at me, I had to jump out of the way & do some fast talking!

First time Someone had put their fag end into a bin their dorm at school (not a euphemism) and set the block on fire whilst everyone was at the school sports day. I was the first one back and reported it.

Last time was seeing three cars ram in to a fourth, stick a scaffold tube through the windscreen drag the driver out and set about him with more scaffolding before bundling him the boot. Part of a wider 3.14 feud.

They’ve been several in between but I can’t remember what they were for.
