As possibly Clarkson said "The membership of secret societies went into decline once buggery was decriminalized" :-) Or once people realized that you can get all the business connections by joining a golf club.

Isn't that more embarrassing than joining the Masons?

Possibly less buggery and paddling though ;-)

I've been somewhat distracted with work, so apologies to sleep envy and Davie_GLA for not responding sooner.

With regards Twitter, well, I'm 'tweeting' on there exactly the type of thing that people are posting in this thread. I've posted when I've visited other lodges, and when the lodge has visited other lodges, including how the night went, etc., and when it gets to our night, I'll be tweeting what work we're doing.

If you've not looked already, I think you may be surprised by just how much it is being used to circulate information. UGLE, PGL, and many other lodges and brethren tweeting away. It's quite a handy news repository.

I am interested in this and in the technology in particular. I've been in IT for 14 years from the very bottom and do embrace it but i'm not sure how twitter is the best approach. Excuse perhaps my limited knowledge of the platform but to me the feed you put out is viewable by anyone that might stumble across the account. I've set up two FB accounts, one for my Lodge and one for general Masons. Both are private and require invite. Maybe it's different in where i am in Glasgow but i just can't see how you can restrict it.

Might you share the twitter account you post to? I'd love to see more about how you promote the events. Which by the way i think is great idea but needs to be regulated. Again, i'm not sure if twitter can accommodate that level of privacy?

Haven't been here for a while - one of the reasons being that I was finally installed last weekend, just the three years late...

I'm also in the process of dragging our lodge, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century, so the Twitter page went live on Monday (@kentishlodge) and the website shouldn't be too far behind (www.kentishlodge.co.uk). Busy trying to get my head around the UGLE guidelined for website content...

Congratulations to all those recently installed and moving ahead. I now have an initiation and double passing to focus on for December, so probably won't be on here much again for the forseeable future!

And about time too.

Congratulations MAM, and glad to hear you are up and about again.

I think the web site needs a little work (currently a place holder for "New Business"). smile

Enjoy your year, it passes very quickly.

The feed is viewable by anyone, so you wouldn't post anything that you didn't want people to know about. None of the 'work', if you will, just like this thread, except that it won't appear in a list of updated topics for anyone to stumble on. They'd need to be looking for it, or similar.

It's only been going for a couple of weeks, so I haven't tweeted much, but I tweeted about visiting a colleague's lodge in Corby the other week, and it was picked up and retweeted by UGLE. They're not even following, just picked up due to being retweeted by a follower. They do seem to be quite switched on to it, and there was an article a month or two back in Freemasonry Today, so you could say they're encouraging it.

Follow your Province if they are on there. If not, take a look at @PGLDurham or @UGLE_GrandLodge. They're quite open.

My lodge is @Palatine97

@kentishlodge - you have another follower.

I'm gently bricking it at the mo... After a few years on the subs bench (steward) I've been asked to step into JD's shoes until installation in March, then move up to SD!!

First meeting in JD position is Wed, and don't you just know it - it's a first!

Fingers crossed & head in the book!
I done a couple of firsts last year as JD, loved it. You'll be fine, its not that bad. Probably means you'll have a second and maybe a thrid for next year when you're SD. I'm preparing for my first meeting as SD which is a week on Weds. The candidate is a good friend, and I was JD for his first, so I'll have seen him through.
You will do fine I am sure, for me it is more the perambulations than the words that I have found hardest in the Deacons roles.

I am SD this year and we have just come back from our summer break with a 3rd last month and another next. Then we have Xmas lodge and off up to JW I go with our Installation in Jan... Then Feb is a 1st! So I am currently skimming the Charge and post November when I only have normal opening and closing to deal with I will learn it in earnest.... Looking forward to mostly having a seat for a year or three however and not having to be remembering where I need to be stood every five minutes! smile

Just a thought and it might not work for everyone but I have found when it comes to the Deacons roles actually pacing it out in a small space as you go through the motions and words helps to get it straight in my head.
Have to say all went well (apologies for not updating sooner) - but as you chaps mentioned the 'where to go' is more worrying than the 'what to say' ;-)

I've just done LoI as SD yesterday - guess what... A Third ;-)

I done a 3rd last week as SD, it went pretty well up until the candidate returned, as I had forgot to learn that part. I was kind of excused as I was thrown into the role with only 1 loi to practice, but all went pretty well in the end. Its a great position to be in for that ceremony.

Can't think of a - but a massive plus is the millions given to charity every year. Second biggest donator after the lottery I believe? Sure someone else can confirm or rubbish that though?!

We've got our installation on 23rd this month, JD here I come!!

Nice to see another lodge that does Universal rather than Emulation.
