On the 20th May the Sir William Morris Lodge (No. 10003) will be doing a passing and then afterwards a private visit to the Aston Martin OC Museum just outside Oxford if anyone is interested

Saw this on Reddit:

Anyone know what the deal is with the elderly gentleman with suitcases you see around Holborn?

I work around this area and quite regularly I will see (usually) groups of elderly gentlemen in dark suits. They are carrying sort of awkwardly square black leather briefcases. (The briefcases are a bit larger than normal and more square, like they are designed to carry unusually shaped documents).

I keep trying to work up the courage to ask them if they are in a secret society of some sort. But I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on if these guys are Knights Templar or something more boring and ordinary.

Apparently it’s Freemasonry related. Can anyone shed any light?

Assuming this is serious and I'm not due a whoosh parrot; Freemasons' Hall, the chief lodge (United Grand Lodge of England according to Google Maps) is in Covent Garden. On the corner of Wild Street and Great Queen Street so not far from Holborn tube station.

Well worth a visit if you are in the area and have even a passing interest in Freemasonary.

Was a sincere question, at least on my part! What’s the significance of the particular type of briefcase?

It fits the regalia - more specifically the apron. As you become a more "important" mason the apron gets larger, so the case needs to be bigger.

Also get's a badge on it which means you can no longer fold the apron in half and stuff it in a back pack (or carrier bag .....)
