On a serious note keep your cardio and lifting separate. If putting on lean mass is your goal then about 5 mins jog/whatever should do it.
Or just run or cycle there and back and not look into it too deeply.

What bro-science is this? I usually mix cardio and free-weights. Am I doing gym wrong?

Hammering cardio before weight training is generally counter productive, with the caveat that it depends on what you're trying to achieve from the weight training.

Well I never. You learn something new every day.

Aiming to lose the flabby gut, be generally fitter and embiggen upper body muscles in order to look awesome.

But running or cycling a mile or so each way is not necessarily hammering anything.

Yeah, I'm far too lazy to 'hammer' the cardio. Ten minutes treadmill, ten minutes row, a few dumbells and benchpress, and a quick swim to cool down. Drive to gym and back.

If you have a goal then you train for that goal. It's called specificity. Anything that effects intensity or recovery will extend the time it takes to reach that specific goal. Therefore if your target is general weigh training and cardio-fitness then run and do weights. Running a mile won't really help your running however, and running a mile before and after weightlifting won't help your weightlifting.

OP. All parents seem to take their kids to school in a car unless the school is right opposite their house. Surely going to the gym so far away warrants using the car?

No way I’d walk - feel knackered after a good 20 minutes walk. I’m tired enough after work. And it’s miserable when raining.

Re the first sentence - surely that's a good reason to walk!

Does the walking route have a chippy or burger van?

A short jog is an ideal warm up, chauffeur pick up as soon as you start to feel it is a great idea.

Indeed. IMVHO, a good training regimen should have a combination of weight training and cardio during the course of the week.

Avoid strenuous cardio prior to any weights session. Ideally keep them for separate days.

The only reason to join a gym is if you don't have enjoyable trails from the door? So I would drive.
Or if you dont have classes, a pool, weight machines, free weights and cardio machines at home ?
