Some exercise during the day.

A good book for 20-30 mins before bed to relax the mind.

Failing that, the one that never fails - crack one off.

You just need a routine - stop using the PC late at night, warm bath before bed, read and play the same(gentle)CD everynight. You just tune it out in the end but your mind associates it with sleepy time

Very simple thing that I've used myself and my kids do it.

Count your in and out breaths up to 10, then start again. So say (in your head) "inbreath, outbreath one; inbreath, outbreath two....etc".

Concentrating on doing that just stops you thinking about other things, although I find that if I'm simply not tired then I can think in parallel with the counting, so it takes a bit of effort to focus on just counting. If you lose track, don't worry about it, just start again.

A bath, or Bach Night Remedy.

Some nice relaxing music, and no tea or coffee after 7.30

Daft as that sounds, it works because you are focusing your thoughts rather than just letting your brain run wild. I used to focus my vision on the door handle and that could make me go out in minut..zzzzzzzzz sleep

I listen to a talk radio station or a documentary channel on TV. Stops your brain getting bored, which prevents the vicious circle of your mind racing with frustration because you can't sleep.

And less dangerous than leaving a hair dryer on all night.

yes

I listen to the radio with headphones on, I often doze off with it still switched on to the World Service or 5 Live.

Are your trousers round your ankles?

Are you usually woken by a tap on the shoulder, smack to the face and kick in the balls?

Stick Fear and Loathing on the DVD player. I love that film but I can't make it past the Circus Circus before I drift off. Any time, night or day
Ha me too.

Also I must have the window open to go to sleep. No matter how cold it is outside.
