I need to hit the ground running when i land in the states next week, and always find it a bit of a struggle to nod off when flying.

Having never taken sleeping tablets before, can anyone reccomend some?

Also, is this likely to help with jet lag? My thinking is, i'll stay awake for most of the night, sleep on the plane at 8am and then i should be adjusted to the time difference, or is that just a silly idea?

I find sleeping on a plane for more than a couple of hours to be impossible unless i'm

a) flying first class
or
b) drugged to the eyeballs

I've got an idea which could be mutually beneficial. You take my wife and she will bore you to sleep in a matter of minutes. That way I get some peace and quiet too biggrin

in my experience, sleeping pills don't work that well and leave you feeling groggy in the morning. best way is to be naturally tired when you board the flight, maybe by having less sleep the night before.

i don't have a problem sleeping on planes, i just close my eyes and tune into the background drone of the aircraft and i slip off. any sort of background noise works, i can sleep on buses, trains, etc, equally well.

Night nurse will do the trick but leave you drowsy. Taurine is good for clearing your mind with no side effects.

I'd echo that.

Last year I commuted to South Africa on business, and all the flights are over night - I would arrive in a mess, because I can't sleep on planes. I bought some in the chemist in Joburg (it's that easy) and took one on the plane for the evening take off. I didn't sleep any better.

Next day, all day, I was unfit to drive a car - I was so groggy.

Also - it shouldn't be a problem flying from UK to US in terms of jet lag. You stay awake on the flight there, it should be daytime, then have an extended evening and a full night's sleep. OK, you may wake up early, but it's no big problem.

It's coming home when you have a much shorter night, for a night flight, that leaves you monged.

"Right, here's the plan. First, we go in there and get wrecked, then we eat a pork pie, then we drop some Surmontil-50's each. That way we'll miss out on Monday and come up smiling Tuesday morning."

prescription as i had really bad insomnia and could go without proper sleep for a week and would just be a wreck, I can eat nytol till the cows come home and it doesnt work, but zopilcone is great.

I explained the above to my doc and they have no issues doing it as long as i didnt use it every day.

Me too.

Its a serious knock-out drug - make sure your not holding a drink shortly after popping it though.

I tried that game and I won once. Took three and they didn't work.
Was quite proud of that. Now they don't work at all though.
