Many tick more boxes than either of them. Lets not aasume that very thing saint David does is for the love of all things Great Britain. A lot is done simply to keep him in teh public eye, and to further any career he has after his football days are over.Which in real terms was 2001.

You mean this Craig Bellamy? Must be a total eh? http://www.craigbellamyfoundation.org/ Well, this Craig Bellamy appears to be one: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-12597689

I think a lot of those who are saying that Olympic Football is a bit pointless are missing the point, really.
It's a tournament where players under the age of 23 get a chance to shine - the 3 'over age' players I suppose are brought in to mentor, coach and inspire the younger players.
If you look at it from that perspective - then Beckham and Giggs are the kind of players who definitely should be picked. Richards and Bellamy aren't really what you'd be looking for.

Without Beckham there may not have been a London Olympics so no Stuart Pearce to muck things up. Unlike most other sports at the Olympics, this is not the pinnacle of football and arguably it should not be included. (Tennis is the same.) Tickets for the GB v Senegal game at Old Trafford are £90. I thought of going, but this has put me off. Soured the competition.

Great post I also agree - this is what it is all about. I would have Griggs, beckham and another oldie (Scottish if there were any decent players). They may not play in all the games, but in the squad. Also I watched beckham play for la galaxy last October, and although I would probably get a game in MLS if I was fit, he still knows how to play football. A good point someone else made - having seen Milner/young in euros, I would rather beckham had been there!!!

Blib said: TwigtheWonderkid said: Didn't he score our winning goal against Ecquador in the last 16 in 2006? But broadly agree. Any pro footballer who goes to play in the USA is effectively announcing his retirement from international football. You announce your retirement from International football by announcing your retirement from International football. Keane plays alongside Beckham and played for Ireland in the Euros. I did use the word "effectively". An Keane's performance for Ireland in the Euros proves I'm right!

Even of that means the last 30mins as a super sub My choice I'd take Giggs and Beckham definitely and then maybe Owen as another legend. A lot of hate for Becks comes from what he does off the field which is a shame because I challenge anyone to show me a real dip in his career? Great player and the sentimental reasons are secondary imo. Pearce has made a mistake.

They'll come a time when he's too old and too slow. And that time was about when he went to play pub football in the USA.

Beckham will always be class because class is permanent I liked your post though

Look, are you seriously positing that Bellamy deserves his place more than Beckham? Really? Like truly? You seem to have got a bit of a bee in your opinionated bonnet. Fact is Bellamy is a Premiership player with pace who can beat players and change a game. Beckham, however good he was in THE PAST, is not a great player now. He made his American second rate bed a long time ago. And puhlease, do not attempt to justify some kind of point by saying Keane went to the Euros. This is Ireland we are talking about, they have no talent, oh, and Keane was s t and did f k all. FWIW I think it's a bit of a shame he can't sign off a great career with an Olympic appearance, however if you are picking the squad on merit it is a stretch to put him in it. I may have done though, simply to add to the London feel good factor, sell some tickets and avoid all this hoo-ha in the build up.

If it was merit alone, then why the hell is that neckless thug in the side?
He's not the best player in his position at Liverpool and would only be 1st choice at a top half Championship team these days - he's purely in the squad to satisfy the Welsh FA.

DuncanM said: Beckham will always be class because class is permanent People have said that about Gary Glitter, Michael Barrymore and a host of others who have been held in high esteem, only to disappoint massively. I wouldn't get too loved up about any footballer, you'll likely end up regretting your loyalty.
