Oh come off it, that was a clear foul. My son and I called it in real time and were amazed the goal was initially given. We didn't celebrate as we knew it would be overturned.

(cross post with the above)
Sorry, but if it was to be given as a clear foul then surely the ref, who had clear view and obviously more qualified than any of us to judge, would have immediately given it. Pushing and shoving goes on in the box (usually 6 of one / half dozen of the other) the defender was putting his arm across to to the same but just got bumped back. The ref called it correctly first time round but hadn’t got the bks to back himself when the power of VAR gets involved.

Also, if that’s given as a benchmark for a foul , then each game should consist of at least 5 penalties a game, then Harry Kane would be back to break Shearer’s record easily !

Lol, sorry but you're delusional. The Villa player was pushed out of the way of the ball and your player then had a clear slave to book it into the box. In stunned that anyone thinks that isn't a foul.

It's irrelevant that the ref didn't spot it initially, that's why we have VAR.

Spot on. I hate VAR and have never been in favour of it, but that doesn't mean it sometimes doesn't get it right. The referee dropped a clanger not giving it initially, and var alerted him to that clanger. The ref had a look at the screen and agreed he'd dropped a clanger. No conspiracy or agenda on this one.

How’s he talking bollacks? He said they should do, which they should as its a clear foul. Not they would.
It wouldn't even get reviewed the other way around because there's not enough in it. Not a chance a penalty would ever get given on review for that but happy to chalk off. Nonsense.
The standards for overturning a penalty call and reviewing a foul in the build up to a goal are different. For VAR to instruct the ref to review a pen he has or hasn't given, var have to decide it's a clear and obvious error. That means the ref may not give a pen, var reviews it, thinks "in my opinion that it a pen, but not giving it, whilst I don't agree, is not a clear and obvious error, as it's a legitimate viewpoint, so no review".

An offence leading up to a goal, ,handball, foul, etc. doesn't have to be clear an obvious, just questionable. So var looks at it and says "ref hasn't given it, but I think it's a foul, so I'll ge the ref to review it".

The ref could have looked at the Badiashiel push on the screen and thought "not enough in that, the goal stands." But he was never going to do that because it was clearly a foul.

Oddly ref not asked to look at obvious hand ball last Saturday in Wembley
because var had already made their mind up…hit his arm as he was making himself wider, not at his side, ball had to have travelled 10 yards etc and at worst should been an attacking corner for us
If he didn’t think it hit the wall then isn’t that a clear and obvious error ?

It’s a clear & obvious error that the ref didn’t think it hit the wall.

however VAR has no authority over incidents relating to corners. So unless the penalty call was a clear & obvious error, then there is no reason for a review.

The application of VAR is a farce, but at the moment it is what it is.

VAR should not be about opinion, but fact. In this case the facts are it was a clear push. It was a foul, the fouled lead directly to a goal, VAR correctly said to the ref, “have a 2nd look”

I'm struggling to believe anyone with an ounce of objectivity thinks that goal should have stood. We all want Chelsea to win, especially last minute 3-2 away after being 2 down, but get a grip. Stevie Wonder would have given that as a foul. I don't know what the ref was thinking in the first place

No surprise. He's been a decent player but I don't think he had his best years at Chelsea, Our average age in the squad will drop about 15 years.

Exactly. The same people who claimed it wasn’t a foul on here would be screaming blue murder if it had been Villa scoring from it rather than us. It was obvious straight away the ref had dropped a clanger by not spotting it.

Silva deserves a send off, he has been amazing for his age despite all the inconsistencies.

I think we'll need some experience to replace him thats for sure.

I think most of the emotion will be that the career is ending.

Guys like him must play football in their sleep.

Other than Jackson missing a load of chances, we're so erratic so who knows.
