I've just watched the Markus Liebherr memorial cup matches. If Nigel doesn't shore up that defence, we are right royally f ked. They got buggered to within an inch of their lives by the Arsenal C team. Granted that wasn't the best example of a Saints team, but it wasn't far off. We have a mountain to climb, and quickly.

A couple of decent young signings this week. Add a couple of wise old heads and the squad is starting to look pretty good.

The Saints still need a Centre back.. or even 2 but things are looking ok. Can´t wait for the start of the season and to being back in the Premiership
I also think it´s good news that Pompey are not liquidated. I´d much rather beat them on the pitch than have no rivals at all.

There will be much more pleasure to be gained from seeing them lurch from crisis to crisis for another couple of seasons (until their Parachute Payments dry up) rather than being allowed to make a fresh start.

I've just been up to the stadium to pick up my (delayed by a computer problem) season ticket. It's all starting to feel more real now . I got a ticket for the Udinese match tomorrow as well. Is anyone else on here going?

I am off to the Udinese game tomorrow. Hoped to have a few more signings in by now but will be interesting to see how we perform against a champions league qualifier.
As for our fishy friends down the road let them rot in hell. They had no sympathy for us in our troubled times so why should we give a monkeys about them? As they lurch from one farce to another it amazes me that they manage to squirm out of liquidation. This club has broken so many rules that they need to go under. Yes the fans are collateral damage but you did not see them bothered when they had the good times. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

My (very limited) sympathy for the skunts ran out when one of their foul mouthed, pea brained, inbred fans, spouted a load of vitriolic anti- Semitic bum rubbish about the Leibherrs, on their crappy little forum, just before the memorial match. It's a shame the club probably won't survive, I can't say the same about some of their supporters.

I understand this viewpoint, but we are in the premier league, we have a great chairman, great manager and honestly having Pompey there does create news and rivalry. I agree that the behaviour of a small portion of their fans was abysmal, but we should rise above it and celebrate the success of our club. There are morons in every fanbase and yes Pompey have managed to get out of this scrape, but life is going to be very tough for them and their fans are not going to be giving us too much grief in the near future. Having no rivals as Celtic might find out is not a great place to be

For long periods most Saints fans did not give a second thought to the Skates. I agree that we should get behind the great club we have but I see no point in giving a hoot about them down the road.

Southampton 0-4 Udinese, not exactly inspiring me with confidence for this season! We badly need some pace in the team or we are really going to struggle.

It wasn't a great performance by the lads, but three of the four goals were screamers from 30 or 40 yards. That Udinese number 10 was a right royal pain in the arse all the time he was on the pitch. Only the last goal was really due to a lack of pace at the back from saints. Do Prado had a good match, so that was at least a bit of consolation,

Very poor performance last night. Lack of pace in the final third and more worryingly lack of creativity from our midfield. Add this to playng a £6 million striker on the left wing and I am extremely worried for the first few games of the new season.

A centre back will be needed and lets hope that the lads get a great reception in Manchester this weekend. Be nice to pick up an easy 3 points, but suspect that City might not let that happen

SaintsPaul said: Add to that the £6m bid for Matt Phillips and we really are moving on up. £6m for Phillips, I'll drive him down to Southampton myself for that fee. Very inconsistent. Put him against a poor left/right back and he'll have a field day (and miss most 1 on 1's he'll have). Probably seen him win only a couple of headers, a 50/50 challenge and he won't be going in for it. Ball distribution can be poor if under pressure. He can be a good player, one of those that gets you out of your seat when he gets the ball. But at the same time pulling your hair out as his defensive skills are non-existent.

I don't think Ramirez is a done deal .. hope we do sign him but it's by no means certain at the moment from what I have read.
