Took one of these in px and smoked around in it for a week 5 or 6 years ago,I knew it wasnt going to be good with its scratchy light grey plastics and leather that may never have seen a cow but if one popped up as a (very, very) cheap winter car I think i'd embrace my inner executive pensioner!

Isn't that the one in the background of the ridiculous white E38 with bonnet sized badge?!

Me too. I have mates who don't understand it and mates who do. I for one am completely sold on the concept of refined executive motoring on a relative shoestring.

I mean seriously. People go out and spend 15k on stbox Fiestas.

I thought that but the lack of council estate in the background threw me off the scent!

indeed. a mate i know spent over 10k on a 1.2 corsa brand new 2 years ago. for that, i'd much rather have a minty E38 740i with LOADS of change left over for insurance, running costs and petrol. he was doing just 6k miles/year so it'd probably take quite a few years for you to break even between both cars, especially when you consider depreciation. and when you have just broken even after, say, 3-4 years......you'd have spent that time in a lovely 740i not a 1.2 corsa.

None of my mates don't understand it, they just have genuinelly no idea how little these cars actually cost.

i'm in love with barges now. what happened to the me who used to love smaller 4 seater coupes with manual boxes like the 135i? i'm now 100% convinced my next car will be an E65, either a 745i or 750i, heck....i would even like an Li model. that hasn't been helped by various people saying they basically blow the E38 into the weeds for comfort, refinement, handling etc.

i'm going to start saving now hehe

you guys have ruined me for the rest of my life!!!
I know the feeling. smile

I'm definitely committed to barges now. I'm waiting for my start date for the Royal Navy. My annual mileage will be halved to 4000, my man maths tell me that I can then afford a V8. I've just got to decide weather it's in an E39 or E38... with a £4000ish budget. Can't wait for that day, oh and my 528 will be staying in the family too. Happy days smile

So... can any of you chaps beard me on the satnav? From the link I posted earlier is it possible to tell which version it is? The seller seemed to think the maps were a bit out of date but he hardly ever uses it.

Also, it has a small Motorola mobile in the armrest with a connector... is it possible to iPod that connector up and use it in situ to deliver music? Or am I looking at a Dension into the multichanger connector?

Cheers!!!

You need an Intravee! Best ipod integration bar none for the E39 with Nav.

It's made by one bloke - he's a bit of a genius. Not only does it give you full iPod integration with playlists, artist/album search, track information etc all on your nav screen but it also adds additional funcionality to your nav - you can view coolant temp, engine rpm, you can set auto folding mirrors, you can set autolocking, etc etc.

It's great. I've retired mine now as I've upgraded to an aftermarket nav system but when I used it it was fantastic. It's not cheap, but it's better than any other iPod solution you will find for the E38 or E39.

Serious question. Is there actually any point of spending top dollar on a E38 750 (or any other premium priced barge) like that?

Listen to my logic here. Examples of E38 750s are available for as little as a grand in some cases. Providing you could pick one up with most/all of the electrics work and a tidy enough body for that sort of money, surely you'd be better off putting the saved money aside for when stuff like the fancy electric dampers and fuel tank went wrong? I mean mechanically the engine and gearbox combo are pretty bomb proof (In fact of all the engines that powered the cars that I work with I've never, ever come across a M73 engined car needing anything more complicated than an O2 sensor) and stacks of service history, low mileage and pictures outside of a nice, big house are by no means a guarantee that nothing is going to go wrong during your ownership.

I just am beginning to not see the point of making absolute top dollar for something with low miles and stacks of service. Surely having a budget of £5k to spend and weighing the lot in on something like the car above is no more of a risky prospect then having a budget grand and weighing the lot on a £1,000 example. At the end of the day in both scenarios there is nothing left in the bank if something were to go wrong.

I'm not saying that people should go out and buy obviously abused, ropey examples and endlessly throw money at them, but I'm struggling to see how someone can justify the significant price premium on a few bits of paper and some lower numbers on the odometer, neither of which being cast iron guarantees.

Personally I think you make a very good point. My entry fee was very low but I've gotten a bit stung on my E38 with over a grands worth of suspension, but if it was a keeper I'd now know it would be fine for another decade or so. Thing is, it won't be for sale for what I paid for it because of that (obviously I won't get all the investment back) but I think most cars should be priced about right in the first place, that is to say a reflection of current condition and recent work completed. If cars are very very cheap then I think there's a reason.

For me the reason why I wouldn't want a cheap one is because I would absolutely resent ploughing money into a tatty old car which a £1k 750i would invariably be. If it was a pristine minter for rahter more than £1k the bills it would generate, even if they were the same as the £1k example, wouldn't seem quite so pointless.

If that makes sense. It probably doesn't but don't challenge it as its the thought process I use to justify throwing 200 quid tyres at mine hehe
