'Driver fighting for life after he crashes hired Lamborghini Gallardo at Woodford Aerodrome and ends up in nearby garden'

http://t.co/WdN81aPL

Not sure of the full story here, was he on an organised track day, VMAX style event, or had he hired the car then taken it to an airfield?

Doesn't sound good, but the 21-year-old just got away with a bit of bruising, which is either a testament to the safety of the car or if you're writing for the Daily Mail a 'Miracle'.

If privately rented there would surely be a problem with going to a VMax event to push the cars limits? Can't imagine that being insurable. Also, if it were one of those 'experience' days I'm pretty sure a spoilsport has to ride shotgun in case you have too much fun?

Is insurance checked at a Vmax event?

"Police Sergeant Danny Byrne, of Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We believe the vehicle was being driven at a high speed and it is likely the driver may have lost control."

Do the Police only recruit utter imbeciles or is their training designed to create them?

I mean seriously - I know Sherlock Holmes books made the Police out to be idiots but they don't model themselves on that, do they? smile

It looks like the guy was thrown from the vehicle so presumption is he wasn't wearing his seatbelt whereas his son was.

This updated story says;

"The pair had been given special permission to use the runway in the 200 mph Gallardo Spyder by the owners of the Cheshire site - Avro Heritage."

...so perhaps he was an employee?

But all the best to him and I wish them both a speedy recovery.

It's a holding statement to confirm the basics, most likely put out by a civvie media relations type following a press enquiry.

Unlikely to be checked at the event, but the policy covering the car is likely to cover road use only not track use - The hire company are now minus one car, and will want it replacing - If the insurance duck out because it was at a track, then the driver will be getting a rather expensive bill through the post I would think (if he recovers)

Exactly. But it wouldn't actually stop him using it on a track. Just voided insurance if he did.

Article in the torygraph states:-

Driver bruised but ok
Passenger fine
Old bloke pottering around his garden was clobbered by the Lambo and is quite unwell in hospital.

Which is a bit of a different story to the above. Which story is true I don't know.

Just had a look on Google Maps and there's no houses anywhere near the ends of the main runway (400m+ through trees and fields), even those near the ends of the smaller runway and are long way away, so it's a proper effort of stupidity from first glance......

This is very odd, Woodford has never been used for any kind of event involving cars before. It was sold by BAE Systems a few months ago to Joe Bamford of JCB family fame. My first thought was that the people involved could be Bamfords as they're petrolheads.

The house the car hit is very close to the end of the runway so I can see how they managed to hit it, but the crash must have been immense as there's a drop from the airfield down to the property.

I could be wrong, but isn't he dead? A while ago?
