To be fair you aren't far from the truth...... My drinking daze are well and truly over ( at least compared to what i used to) smilesmile

But given that scenario would you drive at 1am?

Mike

So hypothetical question.

If i start drinking at 12 noon, and drink one unit (half a pint) every hour until 12 midnight, when would the average person be able to drive again?

Mike
I like psychometric tests.

I'll go for C) 2:00am

To the 6 pints in 12 hours, 12 units in 12 hours; is the answer 2 am? 2 hours for first unit then 1 hour per unit thereafter? Or is it 1pm being 2 hours plus 1 hour for units after the first with the clock starting when the drinking stops?

Don't really understand why alcohol would not be absorbed even when drinking is going on. So head says the first, but as I am Not sure technically but gut feel is somewhere in the middle?....

You start the calculation when you stop drinking, not when you start wink

At work I have to be about a third of the limit for driving, I forget what measurement but the number is 13. General advice is if you're having a couple of pints, give it 12 hours. If you're on a bender, give 24 minimum. No idea how that helps the OP though hehe

If you are a heavy drinker, don't forget to add the 2 units you were over when you started drinking yesterday, oh, and the 6 from the day before yesterday you didn't count when you started drinking.

Oh forget it. You're just topping up and are never really sober.

You just drive anyway.

Until you get caught.

Or crash.

Had a serious session last night, stopped around 3am. Had to drive home this afternoon around 3pm. Felt very uneasy about doing so. Felt "fine" enough to drive but would be wary of being breathalyzed.

I necked the half pint at 12 noon and then stopped drinking ( for one hour!). There is much misleading advice with regards to this subject. The simple advice is if in any doubt, dont or breathalyse. Just being devils advocate...... wink

After a proper session, it's 1.5 hours x number of units... Counting from whenever you started drinking.

So 14 units = 21 hours, but if you started drinking at lunchtime you should be fine by the following lunchtime.

No. It's 2 hours for unit 1 and 1 hour per unit thereafter. Thus 14 units = 15 hours to get rid of.

Thats the second best bet, really I shoudlnt neck a half bottle of Vodka and god knows how many pints of lager biggrin

Very rare for me to do that, but went for it the other day, strangely my head was fine the following day but I did make a point of drinking gallons of water.

I just avoid driving at all the following day, I dont think my normal three or four beers would register at all the following day by the time I need to go anywhere, if I am not sure, getthe missus to drive, go on foot, my bike or public transport, wonder how many people have been banned through laziness when they had a viable alternative.

Also, for me, regardless of my blood alcohol level, I was utterly knackered, nodding off, which really is as bad as being under the influence, it is just that i is more difficult to get banned for it, it is a shame really that we tend to only do the right thing due to the massive penalties rather than just common sense, even then some cant manage that.

I remember reading somewhere that the majority of people caught driving over the limit in the UK haven't drunk anything on the day they are caught.

Wouldnt surprise me, I think that a lot of people think that five hours sleep resets everything, a lot of people are very anti drink driving but dont understand how long it takes to go from your system, how many people drink until 2 am as well.

Partner pressure as well, people, especially with kids go out and get wasted and then have to take the kids to swimming lessons, my thinking is that in that case, sod the swimming lesson and next time dont drink so much or plan anything the following day that involves the car.

I got a comment off a manager at work that illustrates this, I was driving, we were on a team meal, all paid for, a regular occurence. He raised an eyebrow and made a comment abour me drinking and driving, it was six o clock and I had one pint, we then had a meal and at 11.15 I went to my car. I dont think there is any way one pint of Peroni would put me over the limit, I woudlnt drive straight away as was on an empty stomach, but five hours later, after food I doubt it would even register. Same manager was staying at a hotel with his team, they all got wasted and then drove in the following day, reeking of booze, must have been over the limit.

I invested in a breathalyser kit before embarking on a road trip recently. After a Sunday pm sunny afternoon in the pub, and a finish before midnight, I was surprised that at midday the next day I was still blowing over the 0.08 limit, even after a full english breakfast, a walk and plenty of water. By 12.30pm I was blowing over 0.05 but under 0.08. Made me think about it a lot more.

That's a lot of alcohol to consume in one day.
The VAT / C & E folks must love you, all the taxes you pay ;->

To be still over 12 hours after you stopped implies you had at least (2 + 12/2) = 8 pints
active inside you at midnite when you stopped.

Given that the body processes about a unit per hour even when you
are drinking, implies you've had something like a 10 - 12 pint session that day.

No way would I be looking for the car keys 12 hours after a session like that.
I'd be checking into the local hospital.
