StuartGGray said: I cranked up the air con to full but left the windows open, front and rear to empty the car of hot air as I drove along. After a few minutes I shut the back windows but left the fronts open. The air con kicked in after a few minutes, covering me in lovely cold air with the blower at full chat. I left the windows open because it was also nice to have a heat on my arm. Do you run your fridge with the door open to cool down the kitchen as well?

I was always told that with automated climate control, having the windows open has the car trying to cool down the entire world, which can damage the system.

stuartmmcfc said: thanks for the physics lesson but the point i was making was that Jaguar don't say " turn the air con on full blast and keep the windows closed so it can work at its most efficent' or "open your windows and don't bother with the air con as it'd be a waste of time" but do both even though it's been sugested earlier that open windows and air con don't go together. They don't go together once the AC is working as it should. Opening the window initially assists in getting the AC to its optimum operation faster. If you leave the windows open after a short time its efficiency starts to decline.

I've done it loads of times, fresh air and arm out, nice cooling breeze on the tootsies. I used to have a motor (can't remember which) that turned all the air con off as soon as you touched the window button, which was very uncool.

I have a friend who switches the air-con off before letting you out of his car. There does seem to be this amusing mis-conception amongst a few people that some of the air-con magic will escape if you have the window open. Slightly OT but on a similar theme, I love driving late at night with the windows wide open and the heater on full chat

I often open the fridge and stand in front of it if I'm feeling overly warm

A/c with open windows is equivalent of buying a brand new -reg car ...and then putting older /personal plate on it.

I just leave the climate control on automatic at around 20 degrees with not only the windows down but also the roof. Only a couple of times I've turned it off because it's working very hard to cool the entire planet. The rest of the time it hasn't exploded or anything, although to be fair it's rarely over 20 degrees this far north

Jayfish said: 8 minutes to get cool? bloody hell is there a small hamster in a wheel running your system to reduce engine strain The eight minutes is pure heresay. Found it - the 8 mins refers to the Volvo test to see if the air con is working. 8 mins at 1500 revs, air con on, recirc on, blower at 50%, measure the temp in the centre vent. Should be 6-9 degrees C at any ambient temp. I have no idea if this is championship material.
