If you go for a bike oil, there won't be a problem with wet clutches as it has the correct additives to prevent clutch slip.

The Silkolene Comp 4 is a really good oil, a favourite with older bikes and cars.

Hi

The oil you need depends on the service schedule the car is on. If it is on an annual/10k miles service, you need an oil that meets the 502.00 specification. If it's the variable service schedule, you need an oil that meets the 504.00 spec.

502.00 - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-746-vw-50200-oil.aspx
504.00 - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-749-vw-50400-oil.aspx

The 504.00 oils are all good oils, so make your decision based on any brand/price preference you have. With the 502.00 oils, go for a 0w-30, 5w30 or 0w-40 or 5w-40.

If you don't mind using a non-VW approved oil, an ester based 5w-40 can make the engine run quieter and smoother.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the ester ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition.

Hi, can you suggest an oil -

Landrover Freelander 1.8 petrol, 1998, 90k miles but I believe a new engine was fitted by LR within the last 15k miles.

Used very occasionally for dump runs/lugging stuff around. Less than 1k miles a year.

Thanks

Hi

A 5w-40 is the best option

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS NT/CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Shell Helix, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

As a budget choice, a 10w-40 will be fine and I would either go for the Fuchs XTR, Shell Helix, Millers XSS or Motul 6100

Hi, can you recommend an engine oil for a Honda HR-V (1999 model with 115k miles) please? I think 5w-30 is right (based in the UK). Thanks.

Hi

You can use a 5w-30, but sometimes Honda engines burn a drop of oil, making a 5w-40 or 10w-40 a better choice.

Hi,
I've got an everyday, year round, use MG Midget that's not garaged, with a recon engine about 27,000 miles ago

against the advice of others I tried using Mobil 1 0w-40 New Life as I wanted better winter starts and to get back to fully synthetic

I thought I'd used 0w-40 Mobil 1 with my previous Spridget about 15+ years ago but I was either wrong about the rate or the oil has changed a lot

this time round using the 0w-40 from April I found the engine was better for it but it leak more even though it didn't show up on the dipstick or consumption, this was OK but as I had been warned would happen did happen after a fast run then slow to stop oil pressure dropped low befire quickly bouncing back

I missed out on your last 4 litre bottles of Mobil 1 15w-50 Motorsport - unjust reward for me telling you the line was discontinued before smile - but got 4 litres from elsewhere so I'm OK for now but want do you recommend for next change?

another Spridget owner tried Mobil 1 10w-60 Extended Life but reported heavy consumption with it that dissappeared when he went back to a mineral 20w-50

I'd like the extended service change intervals of fully synthetic, not thicker than 50 really for all year round use and better power and mpg - am I with a 10w-50 or do would you have other suggestions?

thank you

thought I'd put this in a seperate post

in my Ford Type 9 gearbox I recently changed to Mobil, Mobilube 1, SHC 75W-90 fully synthetic, supreme performance gear oil and found it improved my gear changes - http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-806-mobil-mobilube-1-s...

the price is very reasonable too

for the previous 2 years it had as supplied, and recommended, Comma SX 75-90 semi-synthetic

Hi

Yes, a 10w-50 sounds ideal as it will give decent cold start protection as well as maintaining better pressure when hot and hopefully not too high oil consumption.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-659-10w-50.aspx

The Nanodrive CFS is, on paper, the best oil available, but the Pro S and CFS are both really good oils, so all are good choices for your car.

Tim,

thanks for your reply

as mine is fairly standard and road going only the consumption is negligible

I was quite surprised at the reported high consumption with Mobil 10w-60 Extended Life perhaps this wouldn’t be the case in my fairly standard engine but the 60 rate would be too high for my engine and use

if you discover anymore Mobil 1 15w-50 Motorsport in corners of the wharehouse let me know smile

cheers

The high oil consumption with 10w-60 is weird, I can't see why as it's so thick.

I'm pretty sure that the Mobil 15w-50 that was on Ebay the other day was the last of it, although I've thought that before. You can do better than the Mobil 15w-50 though. The Mobil is a good oil, but it's a PAO synthetic, making it a group 4 oil, rather than the ester based group 5 oils, like the Fuchs Pro R, Motul 300V, Redline or Gulf Competition.

yes I thought so but it's what was reported, like me he only had the oil in for a short time so no incentive to change

it was a case of a known oil that I've used in other classics without issue, unfortunately the way things are going it probably wont do many 000's miles before it's changed anyway

it's only a road going Midget remember smile

I've noted your comments and got the 0w-40 and Mobilube from you so will give you business and use links to your site for product recommendations

cheers

I'm entering the caterham academy 2013, i intend to do a lot of mileage between races so expect to do a mini service before each race weekend.

First, what would you recommend for a 7:
Engine: 1600 Ford Sigma
Max Power (bhp/rpm): 125 @ 6100
Max Torque (lbs ft/rpm): 120 @ 5350
Weight: 525kg
0-60mph: 5.9 Seconds
Power-to-weight: 227 bhp-per-tonne
Top Speed: 112mph

Would there be a different oil recommendation for race use vs general?

What's the optimum 'run in time' of new oil?

Lastly, fancy sponsoring an academy car wink
