Hi all
First visit in a number of months. I feel I need to get something off my chest although I don't know what good it will do if any. When not enjoying the thrills of driving I cycle a lot (competitively), yes, it's possible to have a foot in both camps.
Yesterday whilst out for a training ride with team mates on a quiet B road, a guy in a Porsche overtook us at what I'd estimate to be well in excess of a ton. I've no problem with that but what I do have a problem with is the fact that he came within 6 inches of me whilst doing it, possibly less!
Now, granted we were riding two abreast but that's allowed and besides which, it's common courtesy when riding, if given time and opportunity, to 'car up' so the traffic can get past (notice I said given time and opportunity...that wasn't the case yesterday). Needless to say on busy roads it's always single file and we only ride two abreast if it's really quiet. We were on a long stretch of road, quite wide with lots of visibility and a clear carriageway coming in the opposite direction that the driver could have used. I can only guess that he was trying to make a point or teach us a lesson but it could have ended in tragedy and scared the sh1t out of me. To be honest, if he'd hit us I would certainly be dead and my wife and daughters wouldn't have had anything left to identify. Think bug on a windscreen
I know the vast majority of us on here are courteous at all times but if, by any chance, the driver of the black porsche is reading (B road between Great Bridgeford and Woodseaves in Staffordshire yesterday afternoon between 3 and 4 pm), think on. You nearly killed me. Give it some thought next time you fancy being a total tool

That's why I wouldn't do it on anything but lanes and quiet roads. in fact, the only time I'm on such roads is when there's no choice, otherwise I keep out the way

Cycling 2 abreast is pretty selfish if there is semi-frequent oncoming traffic. If it was really quiet (can't imagine it would be at 3-4PM) then it was a bit out of order

If you were riding double breast (with a gap inbetween) surely this would of taken up most of the drivers side of the road - therfore he/she must of gone onto the opposite side, perhaps he wanted to scare you bacuase you were taking up more of the road than needed! On the other hand perhaps he was just rubbing your face in it than he can go hell of a lot faster than you were going

I think you respect the motorists by giving them more room and they might respect you by going on the otherside of the road like i do if im in my car. What i do hate with a big passion is a cyclist that stays 2 abreats and then they give all other cyclists a bad name..

It seems that many people dont realise that as a cyclist you have just as much right to a whole lane as possible.
Speaking for myself, sure, ill try and be courteous to traffic, and not to cause a blockage, I hate getting stuck behind anything for a long time.
However, the reason many cyclists will ride down the middle of the lane is self preservation.
2 groups who will never see eye to eye I'm afraid.

Thank-you At least I have someone with a bit of sense joining the thread instead of unbelievable comments on the way I (only occasionalyy) use the road Munkie, the road gets about 2 cars per hour driving along it. I think it was out of order. Pink princess, it sounds like you would be as dangerous behind the wheel as the driver of the Porsche with that sort of attitude. Do you think it's acceptable to 'scare' people? The road was about a mile straight, very wide and as I've said, clear in the other direction so plenty of room to overtake as per the highway code. Oh, and it's would 'have' not would 'of'.

... I very nearly went to the extreme of having this printed on the back of a t-shirt for when I was cycling. The amount of abuse you get from idiots is fairly un-believable at times, even got knocked off on purpose once. (I did manage to smack the back of the car as I went down though and leave a nice dent so not all bad). They didn't stop.

I was always taught to treat cyclists like any other road user. Imagine they are a car and need the same amount of room as a car (cyclsts can wobble after all). I just wait until there is a suitable gap and move onto the other side of the road completely. After all, i don't want a dent in my car

A couple of months ago i pulled my bike out the shed in an effort to get fitter and I'm constantly finding what morons people can be around bikes. I have been overtaken more times than i can count on totally blind bends and too closely.
When i was taught to drive I was told to allow 6ft to the cyclist has room to fall off, if such a thing were to randomly occur. On the whole most drivers dont seem to regard bikes as traffic and expect the bike to dissapear out the way. Based on that I can see a strong argument to ride two abreast just to enorage idiots to choose a place that is actually safe to overtake rather than squeezing past.
That porker driver just sounds like a loon

The OP has already said that when a car wants to pass they move to single file.

Mm, I possibly would be scary in a porsce but I'm more of a lambo person myself.
Oh, and imo if I do see a cyclist I overtake with care, maybe cyclists should take more care on the road also especially as there are so many of them nowadays!! I don't see many cyclists showing much care for drivers!

Well, in my experience cyclists are the most arrogant and ignorant group of people on the road. I've only twice been caused to toot my horn at them, once when one wobbled infront of me as I was going down a sliproad off a duel carriageway and once when one cyclist overtook another cyclist without looking behind him as I was in the middle of passing both of them. On the second occasion I was forced to swerve onto the other side of the road and luckily there was nothing coming. What was I greeted by when I tooted? A nod of acknowledgement that said cyclist had done something wrong? Nope, I was greeted by their middle finger. Oh right, its my fault that you can't look over your shoulder. Am I the one who should be looking after you on the road? No, it is not. Do you pay any road tax to use the roads? No, you do not. They'll be first up against the wall come the Revolution
