272bhp (equal to a 1980s Ferrari 328)
50.4mpg extra urban and 173g/km of CO2 (equal to a year 2000 model 1.0 litre Micra)

Any engine people out there? How is this possible?! What has changed so much about engines over the years?

What speed are they cruising at to get that extra urban figure though? I can get my 3.2 Alfa to do 50mpg if the cruise is set at 30mph.

Extra urban is rubbish - its THE most economical way you can drive (thinking steady 50-55mph) and is totally impractical in the real world. Nonetheless, the pace of progress in petrol engines is hugely impressive:-

Our Z4Coupe 3.0i has the same 272bhp unit endowing it with 0-60mph <6secs, 155mph+ capability yet it consistantly delivers 30mpg+ in day to day driving.... so faster than a late 80's Ferrari but more economical than a late 80's 2.0 family saloon smile

Done straight after the Urban Cycle (and so you then can get a 'true' combined), Extra Urban is, roughly, half steady-speed driving and the rest accelerating (several times), decelerating (several times), and some idling. Maximum speed is 75mph, average speed is 39mph and the distance covered is 4.3miles.

If you really care it's Directive 93/116/EC. I'm bloody sure I don't smile

Lets not forget it probably weighs more than double the Micra and 50% more than the 328. Makes the figures even more amazing.

I'd have a manual 330ci again in a flash. The performance/handling, comfort, looks, economy and sensible insurance and running costs are second to none in my experience.

I looked for another one (would have been my third) a while back but couldn't find a manual in sport spec anywhere at the time. frown

Actually the engine in your car (and mine) is slightly less powerful than the one on the 330i (265ps vs 272ps) and less economical too (32.5mpg vs 39.2mpg official combined).

Takes nothing away from your car though - still a fantastic achievement, but the 330i is even more impressive.

Think I'll cope without that 5bhp winkhehe Mighty achievement IMHO. Next Z4 3.0 35mpg/160mph+?.....

Blimey. I find it amazing (read, hard to believe!) you can get 50mpg in those circumstances..... 55mph on a flat road maybe, but accelerating kills mpg big time.

Thanks for your replies. For the record, my 1998 328i (193bhp I think) would probably do about 32mpg in those circumstances, and my old 2000 330ci (231bhp) about 34mpg. Things have moved on a lot!

Direct Injection means higher compression ratios and therefore more efficient combustion, 1D and fluid dynamic analysis means better volumetric efficiency, Efficient Dynamics means little or no ancillary drag on the engine (alternator only charges down hill I believe), tighter tolerances allow low friction oils, combine it with low rolling resistance tyres, better aerodynamics, et voila! Magnifique!

Thank you. What's "1D"?

yes

The art of making a car perform exceptionally well during the tests that dictate the official figure published in the cars documentation.

No one will ever, EVER, get close to the headline efficiency figures published for any current BMW brand car - Many manufacturers are optimistic, however BMW are plain ridiculous.

Sorry, I actually beat BMW's figures.

1998 328i: Parkers quote 31mpg combined for my 328i (I think that's the BMW figure), whereas as I stated above, I get about 32 combined.

2000 330ci: Parkers quote 31mpg again, whereas I got about 33/34.

2007 320d: My Dad's got one of these, and he also matches/beats the BMW figure advertised when he bought it.
