I would love a replica of the old 50s F1 cars (cigar shapped things) but with wheel guards so it could be used on track days. Single seater. Dunno if a kit exists?

I expect they do at super high prices but I dunno why a reasonably priced kit couldnt be produced, cant be any more complex than a 7 surely?

This is the only single seater that I've found on the net that would fit your brief, I believe it's a street legal Lotus 51

Christ thats awful, Tiger do an ERA that is very nice but I was thinking more like this...

Spaceframe chassis, usual choice of engines, even bike engines, bodywork - I cant find anything like this anywhere, I wonder why not?

Wasn't a kit, but there was Gordon Murray's Light Car Company that made the Rocket.

I am planning a similar project at the moment. I may go for a diff (from the front of a Yam 4x4 quad) at the front and a single rear wheel. 4-1 ratio and an 11kw brushless motor and a bunch of Li batteries. 2 seats. Golf buggy steering rack. Not sure what it is going to look like yet, but I may use the Pagani Zonda rear lights. There are only £12 each!

Have you considered using two lower kw motors instead of the diff? I have know idea how it would stack up weight wise.

Good idea but 2 small motors cost more than one large, then you need 2 controllers and then 2 gear reduction systems. I like the idea of the speed automatically dropping off via the diff when you lift a wheel in a trike. Although the little diff works well just for a right angle drive and an ideal 4:1 ratio.

Nice but its not quite the same shape due to being mid engined. I think the F1 cars of the time (50s) were front engined?

I accept that cost is against you when using two motors and all the associated bits and bobs, how come you need the 4:1 ratio. I guess I liked the idea of a using software control to give to the equivalent of a very smart differential i.e. you could put most of the power to the inside wheel when cornering.

The motor runs more efficiently at 3600 rpm so we need a ratio reduction in the order of 4:1 This also increase available torque by x4 of course.
I would love to see a realisically priced in wheel motor set up driving 4 wheel motors from one controller. Costings I have seen are more than a new small car just for the componenets though.

_Leg_, I have to agree - whatever possessed them to fit those clamshells vomit

It might look a bit better with some discreet cycle wings.

Have you seen the Ronart? There's also the Kougar and the Brooke. They're all two seaters and probably not using the engines you'd like, but they're the closest I can think of. (The Brooke isn't even a kit these days either.)

There was a long thread about road legal single seaters a little while ago - have you seen that?

There's always the Furore, of course! hehe

The may look a bit comical now but you have to remember that, back in the 60's and early 70's, most Lotus Sevens were actually supplied/built with (as they later became known) clamshell wings. I think the '51' emerged in 1967?

Yeah. Ive seen those. The two seater configuration seems to ruin the proportions. Given the classic nature of the 50s f1 cars I'm really surprised no one does a replica kit. Mind you I guess they assume everyone wants 2 seats. Shame.

Actually, Dave, I really, really like clamshells on a seven, but on the 51 there, they seem to stick up so high compared to the body, it makes the car look very insect-like. And then they had to go and pick them out in a nice bright yellow ... rolleyes
