hello everyone
it doesn't look to good with getting tvr's into the states unless you have millions or your a film star or whatever! but canada does look more possible, so has anyone taken a TVR there as a tourist or on a work visa or imported one thats over 15 years old? is there any cerbera's there? i'm looking for as many facts and figures as possible, shipping costs, import/export tax?, is it the same rules all over canada or is there some points of entry that are better than others?

Heard that rumor before about 2 Yanks. I understand there are big costs to pass local import laws. Once I have proof moneys are being spent ( and passing importing laws.)then I will believe TVRs may have a come back. Untill then we have to deal with what cars we have and do what it takes to keep them driveable. Thanx to guys like Marshall in the USA and John Wadman in Canada and my local mechanic I have been able to keep all 3 of my cars on the road and live the dream that TreVoR and Martin gave us.

After umpteen promises, that guy seems to have vanished off this forum. Perhaps he realised that it wasnt quite as easy as he first thought, ie; immpossable?

15 years old really helps. Buddy down the street fom the UK is building a car that is on the lines of an Ultima with an LS7 engine. He has friends and co workers who are coming from the UK bring a piece of susp.etc. over packed in their suitcases.Knows he can get past emissions with that engine but is only 70% to 80% sure he can get past kit car and safety controls. I think 15 year old rule is the only way to go.

I'm a Canadian living in the UK and returning to Canada next summer (2011). I WILL be importing a Chimaera or Griffith back to Canada. The car must be 15 yrs old or more, and I will have to own it for 6 months before I leave the UK, and one year after my return to Canada prior to selling it. The RIV applies to vehicles from the US, 'cause lets face it, 99% of imported vehicles come from the US. Keep in mind that different provinces have different rules. For example, Quebec has disallowed the importation of Right-Hand-Drive cars for anither 6 months, while it's investigating elevated RHD car accident rates. The will probably (read certainly) disallow RHD importation shortly. Vehicle previously registered (before April 29th 2009 I think) or vehicles older that 1971 will still be OK to get registered. So, before someone thinks about importing a RHD, figure-out the rules applicable to the specific province in which you're going to live.

Frank You don't have to own a 15 y/o car for ANY length of time prior to importation, nor must you own it a certain time before selling it. (at least in Alberta) If it's 15 y/o, that's good enough. Trust me... been there, done that, when I imported my UK spec wedge.

With a Claim of right and with lawful excuse anyone can bring in this car in from the UK or for that matter any car from the US. There is no law that says you can't.

I live in a very very small town in Ontario. And my jaw dropped when I saw a Griffith 500 drive by, first one I had ever seen in my life. Needless to say, I've never even bought my first car, but one of my life goals is to drive one of those around here some day.

Ask the Canadian distributor...

I drive a TVR Griffith 500 ;-) I don't see you as active on Pistonheads, but if you do spot this send me a message. There were seven brought to Canada by TVR North America. I have one of the two red Griffiths. There is a black one, a blue one with stripes, two red, green/blue, and then there are two out of province. There are also some privately imported ones, I know of three, two in Ontario (yellow and blue). Cheers, Rob.

There is a question being asked to the transport boys in Ottawa right now and hoping to get a ruling on it soon. IF(and that is a big if) the ruling is what we hope/dream for, it will be awful expensive and have to be classified as a "Kit Car" with no TVR badging at registration time. I am not holding my breath on this but we do think it was worth checking into. At the moment we have 7 LHD and 1 RHD TVRs in the Calgary area and the newest being a 1994 Griff. If you make it to the Calgary area, look us up for a TVR fix.

Brap Brap is correct. To import a car to Canada, it simply must be 15 years old (provinicial registration of a RHD issues aside). I too have been there and done that many times.
However, the Law is about to change. (as soon as the Feds finish criminalizing everything they can). They wish to coordinate with the American minimum of 25 years.
