Had this for about a month now, brought it as an early birthday present to myself It needs some little things doing, I am in love with how it drives though, along with the beautiful straight six howl Haven't got that many good pictures for now, but I will be adding some more soon. Here it is with my old 318is that I sold to my friend, along with a lovely hellrot red 323i, and my mates 325tds. I think it's in stahl blue, though I could be corrected, but I've rarely seen another coupe in this colour. It has the full leather interior in black which is rather nice. It's a little bit tatty for now, bit of a crease next to the drivers door, and I plan to replace the angel headlights and the M badges. You may notice its arse is rather high in the air, the front is lowered on coilovers, while the rear, erm.. isn't Going to get the rear sorted out, then get the M50 manifold conversion and big bore throttle body done, along with a remap. Also looking to get a new exhaust system on it, something which compliments the sound of the engine well. Unsure which one to go for yet though, any suggestions are welcome. But until then, the golf tee exhaust mod will have to do

If you want quality of build and sound then buy an Eisenmann exhaust - got one on my 328i and its superb, loads of pops and crackles on the overrun as well

Sounds like your up for getting the old girl mint again fair play. There is something I just love about the E36 coupe, and especially the straight sixes, cracking engines. It should look good with the work you intend doing, good luck fella. Have you considered getting some original sport wheels ? They are the best wheels for the E36 imo, even if they are a pain in the ass to clean. Oh well, any excuse to w e some pics of mine (328i none sport), but I have the m50 manifold, throttle body, and carbon simota induction kit (get a dave f if you can, they are the best option). Oh and one last thing : amber indicator lenses rule !!!

Cheers, yours looks like a good example That colour really suits the E36 shape, my mate had a 323i coupe in the same shade and I really liked it. I've been thinking about those wheels, also been looking at BMW contour alloys, I think they look great on the E36. Did you get a remap done on yours when you swapped over to the M50 manifold? I've heard from a few people that some of the low-down torque is lost if you don't get a remap, but I'm not sure whether to bother or not. I'm bidding on a Dave F kit at the moment, will see how long it goes before I get priced out

All I will say is, mine just about hangs onto the back of newish civic type R's and similar performance cars, which is pretty respectable. It does like a drink though (V power) when I'm pushing on, but driving it sensibly I can get close to 40mpg on a run. The contours are my 2nd favourite wheel, they look great dont they. Good luck on the dave f bidding !

I am getting swayed towards putting the original wheels back on now thanks to you and Nik Gnashers..

To be honest mate i think the BBS make the sport. just be prepared to spend a lot of time cleaning them. Always was on the look out for a "steel blue" one but then i fell in love with "avus"

Avus blue is very tasty, as much as I hate to say it I think it's a far better colour than mine

Well I found out it is stahl blue after all. Here are a couple more shots: Looks much smarter when it is cleaned up and has the caps on I'm getting increasingly pissed off with the headlights, as they don't actually work, they just point down at the road and dart up and down depending how bumpy the road surface is. Adjusting them didn't work either. I guess this doesn't matter much as next week I should have some nice OEM ones for it. Also getting parts for the M50 manifold conversion tomorrow Hopefully all the hoses too, and the throttle body. I'm not sure when I will get round to actually fitting it to the car, as I might wait until I have enough to splash out on a remap before I do it. Quite looking forward to the end result though.. And to top it all off I've now got a pair of standard BMW badges, so those f king godawful M badges will be off soon

Well some bad news, yesterday the head gasket decided to give up (right outside a bus station no less) To say I'm pissed off is an understatement. Bloody thing.

That is a shame Where there any symptoms prior to it happening - e.g. loss of coolant, higher temperature, mayo under the filler cap? I ask because I have pretty much the same engine in my E46 and am slightly wary of something like that happening... Is it a big job to fix?

Under the filler cap is indeed full of tainted yellow mayo everywhere it seems. Beforehand more smoke than usual was coming out of the exhaust, I had noticed this the day before, I had intended to investigate it at some point. Oops. It is a big job, a whole day or 2 to do at least. If I took it to a garage to do it, it would cost so much to the point where I might as well break the car up. So I am looking into doing it myself! Looks like quite a pain in the arse however, and I need to get quite a few special tools for it by the looks of things.

Be aware the the M52 engines are known for stripping the threads in the block when refitting the head bolts.
Probably cheaper to replace the engine, can pick them up for £250 and have it swapped over in a day, not to mention you can recoup some costs stripping your old engine for parts.

Sadly I don't have anywhere I could do an engine transplant, don't have a garage or an engine hoist. I only have 2 weeks to fix the car before I go back down to uni, otherwise it's going to be left up here and end up stood for a long time. Balls.

Well I didn't get it fixed, but this week is when I return home so I can finally do something progressive. The headbolts are meant to be tightened to 40, followed by two 90 degree turns from what I've read. It always seems to be the second turn where the threads get stripped. I was just wondering what the chances were of something ugly happening if I tightened the bolts to 40, and gave them just one 90 degree turn. I've read on bimmerforums that a few people have done it and said the bolt definitely felt tight enough, though those were all old threads where the users aren't active anymore. In regards to les3002s idea, I've also seen a few complete engines going in the region of 300-400 (can't find any for 250 ), and a few cheap engine cranes.. decisions, decisions...
