Indeed our tolerance and understanding that everyone wants to law abiding is absolutely flawed and leaves the gates open for all who decide to be career crims to prosper essentially uninterrupted.

Anywho I do hope you get some sort of resolution even though it doesn’t look positive.

Escy, you’ve been defrauded. Consider contacting Action Fraud ( https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/). No guarantee that it will get you any further forward than you are now, but you’ll likely get a better / more informed response than you did from the muppet who took your 101 call.

Best of luck.

He’ll have it running before they answer the phone.

Sorry to hear this Ecsy, but I guess we've all been in similar situations, but usually with less money at stake.

I've learnt a few things about Birmingham from this thread! And I won't bother to go and see the car I was interested in, under the arches near Moor Street station. I was suspicious anyway, but pretty sure now it's a bad'un.

I think most of us get a "feel" for what's good and what's not. It's not all about race. When we went to buy a car for our son, the first garage/dealer in west London (near the M25) got me worried the moment we walked in, can't explain how. We listened politely, I gave my son the "let's go" signal and we went. Then next place (north London, near the M25) was similar in aspect but somehow I trusted it. The sales guy wasn't there, he had to be messaged by the mechanic, which is normally a red flag, but when he arrived I wasn't spooked at all, he seemed genuine and we eventually bought the car, and it's been great.

Moderator edit: less of the racsim please

Have a break from it. Go do something else for the weekend, have a week at work, watch the telly, just ignore it all for a while. You've got a replacement stopgap BMW, you don't need to tear into this full pelt like it's part 4 of this week's car sos.
I agree with this, Escy.

That's absolutely rubbish news about the engine, I hope what you've ended up with can be used. It may well be stolen, but you've at least tried to check that, I'm not sure you can do more.

Have a weekend trying not to think about it, if possible. Or are you worried that if you lose momentum now that'll be it for the whole thing?
I won't lose momentum, the car cant stay where it is long term so I need to get it fixed fairly quickly. Providing this new engine is alright, it'll be running by next weekend. The BMW isn't all roses, the brake servo seems to have an issue so the response isn't always what you expect it, I want to get the girls out of that as quick as I can.

Well for a start OP could put the old engine "back together" and ask to return the one he bought for a refund.

He just needs to make sure he sends the right one back.
There's no chance of returning it. If the new engine runs alright I don't need to seek any re-dress as it is still a decent price for an engine and gearbox. I'm just disappointed they've purposely misled me. If this new engine is a turd, any negations would probably need to be conducted with a baseball bat. smash

All those warning signs and buying anything from Nechells. I echo others sentiments, take time and don’t do anything hasty.
I'm not aware of the area so that didn't flag up as a warning but I'll be honest, just being in Birmingham was a bit of red flag.
Do I recall from earlier in the thread that this engine came in two different variants, with different castings? I’m assuming this is the correct one?

As a teenager, I once bought a second hand engine that needed a rebuild. Only having done a lot of work to it did I discover that the main bearing caps were from a different block… It was a literal bitsa from a very dodgy character who wasn’t inclined to recompense me…

Yes, it's the right block.

I started swapping bits over. The plug for the gearbox is different so I needed to take the wiring loom off. It's interesting to see all the little clips and brackets my old engine was missing.

Sump off. One difference on this engine is there is a tensioner on the chain for the oil pump, my old engine didn't have that. Oil in it looked alright, no nasty surprises in it.

I'm replacing the chains with the ones off my old engine. Which are a couple thousand miles old. This one had all Jaguar stuff, I don't think it's been apart before. All the plastic chain guides looked mint. It's all dirtier than my engine but nothing crazy for a diesel. It wipes clean easily, it's not baked on. No alarm bells so far.

I’m going to get a flaming but that area and others nearby are notorious for chop shops and stripped stolen cars. Anywhere that doesn’t have even a hint of legitimacy as regards a traceable business is clearly a front. These sort of low life hide behind lies and multiple identities to avoid everything from trading standards to HMRC and everything else. The streets are often littered with auction purchased cars stripped of identification and waiting for a clone. Last week I was almost t boned by a car being driven by an Asian lad in Nechells. It had no glass, doors, wings or interior and no seats, he was sat on a crate. It then steered into a non descriptive unit and the shutters were hastily pulled down. It’s like the lawless Wild West.
We were doing something entirely unrelated to cars in that general area and as we sat in the car, a guy approached from a scrapyard opposite…..with a shotgun.

He seen we were all looking at something else and went back inside.

I didn't check back to see what the response was to the report, we’d been warned not to cause any obvious trouble in the area and to absolutely be in and out before it was dark.

Jesus, the safe of the F-Pace keeps ongoing!

I really feel for you with the new engine OP. That area of Birmingham is an absolute hole, I don’t think much good or legitimate happens there.

Hopefully you can make something out of a st situation though.

I have just discovered, and spent the best part of a day binge reading this thread. The most compelling and outright impressive thread I have ever read on this site, by a mile. Your skillset, resilience and attitude.. sincerely, bow

You are a far better man than me. I don't mind getting stuck in with the spanners, and owning a TVR, I do have patience (and have it tested relatively frequently) but this would have beaten me a long time ago. If any car put me through the wringer like this has you, I don't think I would be able to bring myself to look at it, much less get in it and drive it. I certainly could never trust it again. Even accepting that Hamfist Harry had been at the engine before you got it, it is shocking how any engine could need quite so much nursing in this day and age.

Hopefully the replacement engine does the trick. It would be nice if this thing could find a new purpose in life besides letting you down, and kicking you repeatedly in the spuds, and actually start to repay the incredible faith and commitment you've shown.

I'm belatedly joining the ranks of PHers following this thread, and sending massive appreciation and good wishes your way. smile

Escy, I'm compelled to echo the good wishes and admiration of your fortitude and skill.
You are a good man and a skilled one.
I too have laboured in vain on various bikes and cars, often far, far, beyond their value and worth.
Good luck to you, and thank for all the enjoyment your various threads have provided over the years.

Like many others have said I’m full of admiration for your fortitude and perseverance. Is there any way you can check the stretch on your chains to see if the other engine seizing has overstressed them ?

For the sake of a set of chains it would be infuriating if there was a hidden issue with them and they caused another failure in the future.

Thanks for the all the nice things said and the general good will. I'm really hoping this new engine is a good-un as I'll be a broken man if it's not.

In an ideal world I'd change them again but I don't want to spend the money as I don't know if this engine is any good yet.

When the old engine failed the crank wouldn't rotate all the way with the cylinder head off as the conrod was hitting the cylinder liner so I figured the chains wouldn't have taken any extra strain.

I thought JLR revised the chains around 2019 and fitted ones that might last a bit longer
